2020 NFNL Women’s Round 1 fixture released

The fixture for the opening round of the 2020 NFNL Women’s football competition has been released.

The senior women’s football competition will feature a record 25 teams in its fourth season, with 21 clubs now represented across the competition.

Five clubs will field a senior women’s football team in the NFNL for the very first time, with the competition welcoming Banyule, Fitzroy Stars, Lower Plenty, Thomastown and Whittlesea.

Darebin, Diamond Creek Women’s, Heidelberg and Montmorency will each field two teams during the 2020 season.

Grading will again take place over the opening four rounds, with all 25 teams to begin in one competition, before being separated into three divisions after Round 4.

During grading rounds, teams will still be awarded four points for a win and two points for a draw, however percentage will not be carried over to the regular season ladder.

The opening round of the 2020 NFNL Women’s season will be played across three days, with two matches scheduled on Saturday April 4, three games on Saturday April 18 and the remaining seven matches to be played on Sunday April 19.

The opening match of the season will be played between West Preston-Lakeside and Bundoora at J.E. Moore Park on April 4, with the first bounce from 4:05pm directly after the senior men’s match between the same two clubs.

Whittlesea will play its first women’s match against Greensborough on the same afternoon, commencing at the later time of 4:45pm. The match will also be played following the senior men’s match between the two clubs.

All remaining opening round matches will be played following the Easter weekend.

Saturday April 18 will see a double-header between rivals Diamond Creek Women’s and Darebin at Plenty Park, while Banyule and Lower Plenty meet at Beverley Rd Oval in an historic first women’s football match for both clubs.

Among the highlights of the games to be played on Sunday April 19 will be VU Western Spurs unfurling its 2019 ANZ Division 1 Women’s flag when it hosts Bendigo at Henry Turner Reserve.
