Monty continues winning run

Patrick Fitzgerald kicked five goals in the 21.7 (133) to 13.17 (95) win, while the Jackson boys – Luke and Ryan – dominated and were clearly the best two players on the ground.

Inaccuracy in front of goal cost the Boro, who were otherwise well served by youngster Jack Johnston and tough forward Josh Riddle.

The Magpies came in with good form after commanding win over Heidelberg away by 13 goals a week earlier, while the Boro lost to reigning premier Bundoora at home.

But with the ground wet and muddy it was going to be a tough game for both teams.

Monty got off to a fast start and raced out to a three-goal lead thanks to majors from Sammy O’Meara, Michael Stevens and Fitzgerald.

With his side desperate for the next, Josh Grubb delivered with Greensborough’s first major but it was quickly cancelled out by two Montmorency goals, including one to Michael Higgins.

Jason Rogers got the Boro’s second late in the quarter to reduce the Magpies’ quarter time lead to 16 points after a term completely dominated by the host.

Monty again started the second quarter strongly, kicking the first two goals through Dean Limbach and Fitzgerald.

Greensborough replied with the next but Montmorency reasserted its dominance with consecutive goals to Scott Nugent and Ben Haynes.

With the scoreboard beginning to look ominous, Greensborough again responded and with two late goals cut the margin to four goals at the main break. While the Magpies were well in control, the Boro had at least given themself a sniff.

The third quarter started like the second with Monty getting the first two goals of the through James Brooker and Fitzgerald.

Greensborough woke from its early second-half slumber and booted the next three goals in a row through Joel McLellan, Josh Grubb and Luke Stanton.

The sides then shared two goals, before Greensborough’s Tiwi Island recruit Simon Munkara booted his first of the day to make it a 20 point margin at three-quarter time, with Greensborough showing signs that it was ready to make it a real tight last quarter.

But as it did all day, Montmorency was able to kick the opening goal of the quarter again in the last, this time through Ben Sinclair.

Greensborough pegged it back shortly after, but Monty was not to be denied and piled on the next four in succession – including two from James Brooker and singles to Dean Limbach and Ryan Jackson.

This week Montmorency will aim to extend its winning streak to five when it plays neighbour Lower Plenty, while Greensborough will look to break a three-game losing streak when it hosts Eltham at War Memorial Park.

Final score: Montmorency 21.7 (133) def Greensborough 13.17 (95)
