Lions upbeat about season ahead

GOOD timing and unbreakable bonds all acted as a catalyst in Craig Lambert’s return to South Morang as senior coach for the 2014 season.

Lambert returned to the Lakes Reserve after one season as senior coach at Craigieburn in the Essendon District Football League (EDFL), and is excited about his side’s prospects in Division 3 in 2014.

That’s despite a frustrating season last year, which saw the Lions relegated from Division 2 after registering just a solitary win.

“The mood around the group has been really positive,” Lambert told NFL.org.au.

“From the outside looking in, you wouldn’t know the boys have been relegated, they’ve all been really upbeat.”

South Morang adopted a youth policy under Anthony McGregor last season which helped expose many fresh-faced youngsters to the demands of senior football.

While it resulted in a 1-17 win-loss record in 2013, the positives of the decision should start shining through shortly as the club’s youngsters gain more experience.

Lambert said he had maintained a close relationship with South Morang’s 2012 under-17s team – which he coached to a premiership – and believes those relationships have made his transition back to the Lions a lot easier.

“I definitely feel comfortable around the younger boys coming through the senior ranks,” Lambert said.

“I’ve coached 10-12 of them before. They understand the way I coach and I understand the way they play.”

Lambert is excited about the prospect of a number of his young players, forecasting a possible breakout year for Matt Morrison and Luke Hough.

He also said exciting forward Daniel Watson can take his game to the next level after an incredible 2013 season.

The 17-year-old booted 42 goals last year which saw him named on the interchange in the Division 2 Coaches Team of the Year.

The Lions have welcomed Ash Hobbs and Shaun Kervy in the off-season, with the duo set to add some extra experience to the youthful side.

Hobbs is a crafty forward pocket who has crossed over from Euroa, while Kervy is an on baller from Craigieburn, who has followed his former coach to the Lions.

Lambert played a straight bat when asked about his side’s goals heading in the 2014 season.

“I don’t believe in the expectations of club’s winning a premiership the year after being relegated,” Lambert said. “That’s deceptive.”

“The aim is to play finals football and be competitive. Anything more is a bonus.”

South Morang opens its 2014 season on April 5 at home against 2013 beaten grand finalist, Watsonia.
