Boro win rivalry round

Walking around the court, talking to supporters and overhearing snippets of conversation it was unanimously agreed by all – the game would be were fierce and fast.

There is no love lost between these two teams. Greensborough has a more mature and experienced outfit, whilst the St Mary’s team is much more youthful, reflecting their recent inception into the league.

The first quarter solidified good reasons as to why Greensborough is a decent chance to take it up to the top teams this year. Contrastingly, whilst the effort from St. Mary’s was there, the skill level was poor when going into goal.

The Greensborough defense rebounded and capitalised on the turnovers. St Mary’s was creative and quick coming down the court but undisciplined shots on goal were costly.

The second quarter epitomised the word fierce. Limbs were thrown, bodies were put on the line and the umpires didn’t stop blowing the whistle for contacts and obstructions. The intensity from both sides lifted, attacking the ball and throwing themselves into the competition. St Mary’s attempted to ruffle the feathers of the Greensborough team, but to no avail. Cream always rises to the top.

Half time could not come to soon for both sides.  It served as a nice break, time for a drink and some advice from coaches.

The third quarter still had some spark, but nothing compared to the fireworks that was the first half. The St Mary’s defence, led by Jessica Beaton, did well to stop the flow of Greensborough’s goals but the girls in green just had too much class. They were able to pick off passes, lead to the ball and were more aware of players around the court.

Greensborough was able to sustain a four-quarter effort, leaving St Mary’s far behind in its chase for finals glory. St Mary’s can take positives away from the game though – it was quick to the ball and showed great spirit despite the disappointing loss.

Next week, the divisions will be decided. Stakes will be high, underdogs will seize chances, rivals will be born and the first steps to the finals will be taken.
