Heidelberg West made it four wins in a row in Heidelberg Golf Club Division 3 after an impressive 63-point victory over Laurimar.

After holding a 25-point lead at half time, the Hawks piled on six goals to one in the third term to run away with a 17.12 (114) to 7.9 (51) win at Heidelberg Park.

A host of Heidelberg West players were outstanding on the day, with Brad Moore and Jarryd Coulson among the standouts, while Cameron Taylor and Jake Chiminello kicked seven goals between them.

Jacson Cecil was one of the Power’s more effective players for the afternoon, kicking two goals and being an important presence inside 50, while Adam Dennis was also impressive.

The Hawks’ excellent month of football has seen them rise from the bottom of the ladder to fifth position and sit just one win outside the top-four.

A sun-bathed Heidelberg Park was the setting for a vital clash between two sides desperate to keep themselves in finals contention on the back of great form.

But it was the Hawks that had the dream start when Jack Marris kicked the first goal of the match just two minutes in.

Laurimar had its chances early, accumulating nine inside 50s for the quarter, but could only muster three behinds for the term.

Dylan Hayes and Daniel Bailey added to the scoreboard for Heidelberg West with majors of their own to head into the quarter time break with an 18-point lead.

The visitors kicked the all-important first goal of the second quarter through Jack Kreuzberger, before Chiminello had the quick reply for the Hawks just a minute later.

Cecil converted his first major before a flurry of goals were exchanged between both sides in a high quality 10-minute patch.

A Cameron Taylor goal which put the Hawks 20 points in front was cancelled out by Laurimar’s Dallas King just one minute later.

What followed was pure brilliance as Daniel Bailey and Michael Celestin scored magical goals one after the other to send the Heidelberg West crowd into a frenzy.

Cecil kicked his second, before Taylor did the same at the other end to set the margin at 25 points at the main break.

In the third term it was Cameron Taylor who continued his second quarter excellence for the hosts, kicking his third goal just three minutes in.

Joel McDonald got one back for Laurimar to keep the margin under five goals, but the Power struggled to keep the ball inside their attacking 50 and failed to take a single mark inside 50 for the quarter.

Heidelberg West then went into overdrive midway through the term, winning almost every clearance as well as playing the corridor beautifully to put through five unanswered goals.

That included Taylor’s fourth for the game, to extend their margin to 56 points at three quarter time.

With percentage playing an important role for every team throughout a close season, Laurimar were desperate to not let the lead blow out during the final quarter.

The Power did kick the first two goals of the quarter, with McDonald kicking his second and Josh Williamson converting his major halfway through the term.

But the Hawks were determined not to slow down their dominance and the home side took seven marks inside 50 throughout the quarter and kicked the last three goals of the game, led by two from Chiminello, to finish as deserving 63-point winners.

An intriguing battle awaits on the Queen’s Birthday weekend when the in-form Hawks look to make it five wins in a row against ladder-leader St Mary’s at Heidelberg Park in the standalone game for Heidelberg Golf Club Division 3.

St Mary’s had total control of the contest when the sides met in Round 1, but Heidelberg West looks a much-improved outfit this time around.

Laurimar has a week off to before hosting second-placed South Morang at Laurimar Reserve on June 16.

Final score: Heidelberg West 17.12 (114) to Laurimar 7.9 (51)
