Junior Review – Round 3

A look back at last weekend’s junior results as teams took to the field for Round 3 of the NFL’s 2015 season.

In the Under-18 Girls competition, Montmorency recorded a strong win over Mill Park at Kelynack Reserve. Led by a five-goal haul from Lauren Stewart and a best-on-ground performance from Ashleigh Setches, the Magpies took control in the first term and never looked in doubt. Also getting on the winners’ list were Epping, Diamond Creek Womens and Hurstbridge, while South Morang had a bye.

In the Under-17 Blue competition, South Morang was able to maintain its winning start to the season, recording a 14-point win over the previously unbeaten Eltham at Mill Park Lakes Reserve. Led by a four-goal haul from Nashvin Sanjiven and a best-on-ground performance from Jordan Steele, the Lions came back from a quarter time deficit to hold the lead for the rest of the match. Research and Greensborough also played out another tight encounter, with the Searchers taking the chocolates by 22 points. Elsewhere, Montmorency and Mill Park each recorded comfortable victories.

Whittlesea continued its perfect start in the Under-17 Red competition, defeating a gallant Wallan away from home. A tight encounter all day with the lead changing at different times, it was the Eagles who were able to streak clear in the final term to record the 26-point win at Wallan Recreation Reserve. South Morang was also able to get on the winners list, defeating Hurstbridge at Mill Park Lakes Reserve.

The Under-16 Blue competition saw Epping continue its impressive run of form, beating a gallant Yarrambat outfit at Epping Recreating Reserve. After close first term, the Pingers were able to move ahead in the second before going on to record a 46-point win on the back of a three-goal haul to Jack Petruccelle and best-on-ground performance from Jordan Wilkins. Ben Green kicked four for the Bats. Elsewhere, Wallan and South Morang recorded wins over West Preston-Lakeside and Greensborough respectively.

Diamond Creek continued its winning start in the Under-16 Red competition, recording a strong victory over Eltham. Marcus Lentini led from the front for the Creekers with a five-goal haul and now has 14 majors in three matches. The match of the round however was between Montmorency and Bundoora Park, with the two sides playing out a tightly contested draw. A see-sawing encounter throughout, it was the Magpies inaccurate kicking which almost cost them the match, kicking 22 behinds. In other results, Research was able to get onto the winners list, recording a seven-goal win over Mill Park at Research Park.

The Under-15 Blue competition saw Montmorency record a victory over Greensborough at Beale Oval. The Magpies flew out of the blocks with a 10-goal first quarter the catalyst for the big win after three close quarters rounded out the match. A four-goal haul to Zachary Lucas was a highlight for the Magpies. Eltham, Laurimar Black and South Morang were all able to record wins to round out the competition.

Laurimar Black got on to the winners win in the Under-15 Red competition, claiming a nail biting win over South Morang. Following a best-on-ground performance from Kyrellos Rizkalla, the Power were able to come back from a quarter-time deficit to win by 11 points away from home. West Preston-Lakeside and Whittlesea were also able to record wins over Lalor and Eltham respectively to continue their good starts to the season. Epping was the other winner for the week, beating Hurstbridge at Epping Recreation Reserve.

The Under-15 Girls competition produced some thrilling matches in Round 3, with three games being decided by three goals or less. South Morang beat Mill Park by four points, Montmorency edged out Eltham by 17, while Greensborough beat Diamond Creek Womens Red by 18 points. Elsewhere, Diamond Creek Womens Blue recorded a 28-point win over West Preston-Lakeside away from home, while Epping and Wallan proved too good in their victories.
