Montmorency have notched up their eighth consecutive win in the 2022 Melbourne Greyhounds Division 1 season after defeating Greensborough by 50-points at Greensborough War Memorial Park.

The Magpies came running out of the gates early and maintained their dominant mix of pressure and pace to lock away any chance of a Borough comeback, kicking seven goals to two in the third term set up a 17.8 (110) to 9.6 (60) win.

Montmorency remain in second spot but Saturday’s victory sets up an scintillating first vs second clash with Heidelberg next week while the Borough slip to fifth spot and are in danger of dropping out of the top five as they sit just two points clear of sixth placed North Heidelberg.

Jesse Thompson and Nicholas Green were named among the Magpies bests, providing pivotal clearance play including swiftly moving the ball through the midfield corridor in tandem with brothers Sam and Brock Binion.

Joel Trudgeon and Zak McCubbin became clear standouts for the Borough in attempting to weather the scoring storm, shuttling the ball away from the opposing forward line that was under siege for the majority of the game.

The Magpies drew first blood with Brodie Jones opening the term kicking an off the ground snap for a goal. Competition leading goalkicker Patrick Fitzgerald soon had his first of the match the set the tone early for the home side.

Benjamin Fisher brought some life for the Borough with a 40-metre snap for goal that reduced it to a one-goal game.

In response, the Magpies would capitalise on their limited scoring shots, with Green and Jackson Jones kicking goals to help their side lead by 16-points at the break.

Forwards Lin Jong and Danko Bzenic began to find form for Montmorency after each kicking majors in the second term to kickstart an afternoon that would see them both finish with four goals each.

The Borough would keep the game within reach with an electric snap from mid-season recruit Josh Caddy to reduce the margin to 22 points.

Thomas Brindley followed suite, kicking true on the run-up for a major to compliment a game where he was named among his side’s best.

Jong and Bzenic once again defused the fight brought by the Borough, each kicking another major to extend the lead to 28-points heading into halftime.

Greensborough continued to fight after a quick snap from Tristian Stead and set shot conversion from Andrew Stellas brought the score to within 17 points.

However, Garry Ramsay’s side would respond in dominating fashion, with defender Jordan Steele shining as the anchor of the backline for the game along with a midfield that seemed in sync to provide countless entries inside 50 for a blistering Magpie scoring run.

Bzenic would open Montmorency’s dominant period with another snap at goal, giving precedence for Nicholas Uzelac to take over the game himself and score three-straight goals, two of which coming from set shot.

Concluding his outstanding performance, Bzenic had a fourth with majors from Fitzgerald and Jong bringing the lead to an astounding 61 points at three quarter time.

McCubbin would kick three straight for the Borough in the final term but Jong and Fitzgerald again combined to ensure Montmorency produced yet another comfortable performance.
