Section 2 Round 14 – Ivanhoe 1 vs North Heidelberg 2

Ivanhoe 1 scored a runaway nine-goal win over North Heidelberg 2 in its Section 2 top-four clash in Round 14.

After an intense first quarter, where only one goal separated the teams, Ivanhoe only got stronger as the game came to a close.

Ivanhoe scored the first goal of the second quarter and then followed it up with two more goals in quick succession. Soon after, North Heidelberg GA Megan West lost the ball out of court after being unable to control a pass, allowing Ivanhoe to move forward yet again.

In the play that followed, Ivanhoe GD Lauren Henderson and WD Luka Scott fed the ball into the attacking third, as GA Leanna Sartori caught a pass on the run, and with free space calmly converted her shot.

North Heidelberg struggled to score in the second quarter, which included a missed shot after an offside against Ivanhoe inside the shooting circle. Ivanhoe collected the loose ball and took it forward to convert another goal.

The second quarter closed with Ivanhoe in front 18-12, and that lead remained at a comfortable distance in the second half, despite North Heidelberg’s best efforts to mount a comeback.

North Heidelberg started off well early in the third term, with centre Sarah Heers grabbing an intercept off Ivanhoe and sending her side into attack for the first goal, courtesy of an accurate shot by West following a contact call against Ivanhoe GK Sarah Marian.

Ivanhoe’s strong play from the second term, continued in the third and they were able to keep the Bulldogs at back to lead by seven goals at three quarter time.

North Heidelberg GD Jessica Dao got her side off to a bright start in the fourth with a nice intercept and long pass outside of her defensive circle, with the ball soon West who converted from distance.

But strong final quarters by Ivanhoe GD Henderson and WD Scott ensured their side stayed in the lead, providing constant drive and providing their side’s attackers a chance to set themselves up around the circle with controlled play.

North Heidelberg managed to stay within six goals as the matched neared an end, before Ivanhoe added another three goals in succession to seal its win.

Final score: Ivanhoe 1 (35) def North Heidelberg 2 (26)

Section 4 Round 14 – Kilmore 1 vs North Heidelberg 3

North Heidelberg 3 scored a thrilling one-goal win over Kilmore 1 to secure its place inside top-four of the Section 4 ladder.

The match could have gone either way as both teams matched the other right down to the final seconds of the game.

After a slight delay to start the game, North Heidelberg began with the centre pass and moved quickly down towards its shooters.

The defensive work displayed by both teams was impressive in the first term. North Heidelberg GD Kaitlyn Ouliaris forced many errors, while GK Danielle Eastick attacked the rebounds and was ready for each turnover.

Kilmore’s defence worked just as tight. GK Elise Woolfe took many intercepts coming out of the circle.

Kilmore made the most of its opportunities late in the quarter to score a few goals in a row, moving ahead by four goals, to lead 8-4.

The Blues had the first centre pass of the second term but a bad throw saw the ball roll towards the boundary line. However, their midcourt were on their toes and WD Katelyn Cantwell and WA Emily Reilly chased up the ball, working together to keep it in play.

Kilmore’s passes were short and quick, working efficiently down to their shooters who were ready to score.

With Kilmore beginning to take control, North Heidelberg’s GS Cassandra Leech found clear space around the circle and converted to close her side’s deficit.

North Heidelberg had the centre to start the third term, however Kilmore GD Samantha George timed the flight path of the ball perfectly to take an intercept. Her side moved forward to score the first of two quick goals to take a 22-17 lead.

But soon enough North Heidelberg found its rhythm. Defenders Ouliaris and Eastick gave their opponents no room and snatched up rebounds to bring the ball down the court, where their shooters showed great accuracy.

After trailing for the majority of the match, North Heidelberg was able to tie the scores at the end of the third quarter, before a contact in the circle and another on the run allowed North Heidelberg’s shooters to give their side a two-goal advantage early in the fourth quarter.

Kilmore tried hard to snatch back the lead, however a number of missed opportunities inside the shooting circle hurt its chances, with North Heidelberg eventually able to stay ahead by the narrowest of margins when the final whistle sounded.

Final score: North Heidelberg 3 (32) def Kilmore 1 (31)
