Section 1 Round 5 – North Heidelberg 1 vs West Preston-Lakeside 1

North Heidelberg started its Round 5 clash against West Preston-Lakeside scoring the first four goals. The Bulldogs then continued to control the match throughout the four quarters, taking home a win at RMIT University,

A six-goal lead was opened up by North Heidelberg at the end of the first term after starting strong in the first few minutes of the quarter.

North Heidelberg edged further in front in the second quarter as their GS Chloe Meulenmeesters continued to convert goals for her team.

Although Lakeside was down on the scoreboard, their accurate passes and the movement of play demonstrated by the girls proved they were still strong contenders.

Lakeside may have been down in the first half with the score 25-14 North Heidelberg’s way, but the margin was not a reflection of the work the team put in.

WA Jessica Laird and C Mackenzie Blakey worked well together to move the play to Lakeside’s third.

Their shooters Nicola Bonin and Joss Roche scored seven goals in the third quarter but they just could not stop GA Casey Barnes and GS Meulenmeesters from North Heidelberg.

The third quarter saw North Heidelberg shooters continue to hit the scoreboard, while Lakeside looked less and less likely to mount a comeback as it began to struggle to hold possession of the ball and missed opportunities to score.

This was shown in the third quarter scores as North Heidelberg maintained a 10-goal lead, with the scores 35-25.

The early part of the final term saw Lakeside’s shooters Bonin and Roche work up their team’s score, while GK Emma Farrant and GD Rebecca McDonagh held off North Heidelberg from pushing further ahead.

Lakeside however struggled to convert its shots into scores on the board as the term progressed, missing opportunities to get closer to North Heidelberg’s now stagnant score.

Lakeside closed within five goals, with the score at 43-38, but there just wasn’t enough time left in the game for the team to achieve a lead and North Heidelberg came out on top for their fourth win of the year.

Final score: North Heidelberg (46) def West Preston Lakeside (40)

Section 2 Round 5 – St Mary’s 1 vs Ivanhoe 1

After a low-scoring first quarter, Ivanhoe gradually got on top to record a 14-goal win over St Mary’s in Round 5 action in Section 2.

The first half of the game at RMIT University was controlled by the defenders as it looked as though the match would be tight and go right down to the final quarter.

It was Ivanhoe who had the advantage at the end of the first quarter, going in to the first break with a four-goal lead, with the scoreboard reading 11-7.

The second term saw Ivanhoe start to move further ahead as it opened up a seven-goal difference. GA Leanna Sartori shot six of her team’s eight goals for the quarter.

However, scores were still fairly tight as half time approached with St Mary’s cutting into its deficit as the second quarter wore on.

Only four goals separated the sides at half time after the strong efforts from St Mary’s shooters Tracey and Rebecca Beaton tightened the score to 19-15 at the main break.

The match remained close early in the third quarter, with just three goals separating the sides minutes after the restart.

However, Ivanhoe began creating more opportunities for themselves to get ahead and as the quarter went on Ivanhoe stretched its lead, with the scoreboard reading 30-20 as the whistle sounded to end the third quarter.

Moving into the final quarter, Ivanhoe continue to hold control of the game as they increased their lead to deny St Mary’s any hope of coming back to win the game.

The tight defensive work by GK Sarah Marian and GD Lauren Henderson stopped St Mary’s shooters from having too many scoring chances in the final term.

Meanwhile the strong movement of the ball down the court by Ivanhoe gave their own team more chances to get further in front.

The solid work from the mid-court created plenty of scoring opportunities, which allowed Ivanhoe’s shooters to seal the game with their side going on to record a comfortable 41-27 victory.

Final score: Ivanhoe 1 (41) def St Mary’s 1 (27)
