Senior Teams | August 17-18

The selected teams for this week’s NFNL senior football matches.

There are plenty of big name inclusions across the three senior men’s competitions as the regular season draws towards a climatic end. This has been aided by Coburg having a bye in the VFL this weekend.

Macleod skipper Anthony Doherty and midfielder Kurt Manuel return for the Roos’ crunch game against Montmorency – where the winner will take a massive step towards a finals place. They will be joined by Coburg ruckman Adam Swierzbiolek, who will make his club debut.

The Magpies regain Coburg duo Sam Binion and Braedyn Gillard, along with Brent Fotheringhame. However, they will be without both Ben Walton and Matthew Hunt for Garry Ramsay’s first match at De Winton Park since taking on the Montmorency coaching job.

Fletcher Carroll returns for Heidelberg’s top-of-the-table clash with Greensborough at War Memorial Park. It will be his first game for the Tigers since Round 9, after nine games with Coburg. Key defender Josh Gribben won’t feature in the match at Greensborough War Memorial Park.

Aidan Tilley has been named by West Preston-Lakeside for its trip to Bundoora. A win would secure a finals berth for the Roosters, although they will be without ruckman Matthew Harman.

Daniel Venditti, Eamon Gilbert and Daniel Guccione all come out of the Bulls line-up that last week lost to Heidelberg by just two points. Beau Moorcroft and young forward John Jorgensen have been named for what will be club legend Gary Moorcroft’s last game at Yulong Reserve.

Hurstbridge regains key forward Cameron Cloke for its home match against Northcote Park at Ben Frilay Oval.

The Cougars regain rebounding defender Lachlan Boscarini and Ricky Fandrich, but will be without former skipper Bronik Davies and midfielder Matthew Perry for the must-win game to stay in the finals race.

North Heidelberg co-captain Kyle McDonald returns from a five-match injury layoff for the Bulldogs’ trip to Lower Plenty. Ryan McGhie also returns to the Bulldogs’ lineup, although Jhye Baddeley-Kelly and Michael Florance are among the outs.

In A Plus Labour Solutions Division 2, Diamond Creek has named Coburg ball manger Marcus Lentini for its crunch match against St Mary’s at Whatmough Park. It will be Lentini’s first appearance for the Creekers in 2019 after another dominant VFL campaign.

The Burra have been strengthened by the inclusion of captain Dillan Ronalds, midfielder Chris Petroro and defender Daniel Castagnini.

Whittlesea skipper Riley Dyson has been named for his first game since Round 2 for the Eagles much-anticipated clash with Thomastown at the Whittlesea Showgrounds.

The Bears have named Nick Horman for his first senior game of the season, where a win would secure a finals spot for the second-consecutive year.

Elsewhere, Fitzroy Stars have included livewire Jake Firebrace for their trip to Watsonia, while Epping regains intercept defender Tom Burnside for its clash with ladder-leader Banyule.

In Heidelberg Golf Club Division 3, Mernda will make the trip to Eltham College without skipper Josh Delaney. The Demons must win and hope South Morang loses to Laurimar to play finals in 2019.

The Lions regain both Ben Power and Mitch Dickson for their short trip to Laurimar Reserve to take on the first-placed side. The Power need a win to secure the minor premiership and have made two changes to the side that beat Mernda in Round 17.

Meanwhile, Panton Hill key forward Matthew Byron and midfielder Matthew Fowler have been named for their side’s home match against Reservoir, while Kilmore has included Michael McCulloch and Scott Swindells for its clash with Lalor.

Selected teams for the NFNL Women’s competition will be named in the lead-up to each final.
