The Northern Football Netball League is saddened by the passing of John Elliott.

A legend of the Diamond Creek Football Netball Club, John was the first player in league history to win the Division 1 men’s football best and fairest three times.

He claimed the honour in three-successive seasons from 1957 to 1959, also winning the Creekers’ best and fairest in each of the three seasons.

John’s feat has since been emulated by only Bundoora’s Matthew Dennis, who won the league’s Division 1 men’s football best and fairest in 2012, 2016 and 2017.

After a decorated junior career and a promising start to his senior career, John joined Prahran and went on to kick 87 goals in 67 appearances for the VFA club. He also claimed the best and fairest in 1955.

He returned to Diamond Creek as captain-coach and went on to forge one of the great careers in league history.

John was inducted as a life member of Diamond Creek in 1959 and was admitted into the club’s Hall of Fame in 2013.

The club’s senior men’s football best and fairest is also named in his honour.

The Northern Football Netball League sends its condolences to John’s family and friends and the Diamond Creek Football Netball Club at this sad time.
