Wilson’s big punt rewarded

Former Heidelberg forward Lachlan Wilson has made his presence felt on the international stage after making his College Football debut for University of Tulsa.

The 22-year-old punted seven times for a total of 264 yards in Tulsa’s 16-7 season-opening defeat to Oklahoma State at Boone Pickens Stadium on September 19. The match featured on ESPN.

Tulsa is a member of the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and competes in the American Athletic Conference.

Before trying his hand at punting, Wilson showed plenty of promised during 13 senior appearances for Heidelberg between 2016 and 2018.

He kicked 10 goals, including three on debut against West Preston-Lakeside in Round 12, 2016.

Wilson was a member of Heidelberg’s 2016 reserves premiership and was part of the NFNL’s under-19 representative squad the same year.

A redshirt freshman, he did not begin playing American football until arriving in the United States last year.

Wilson has been mentored by former NFL punter and AFL forward Darren Bennett, with his penetrating kicking catching the eye of the recruiting staff at University of Tulsa.

He has locked down the punting position at the commencement of the new season and impressed on debut, finishing with an average of 37.7 yards, with a longest effort of 49 yards.

Tulsa’s second round match against was scheduled to be played on September 26 but was postponed after several players from Arksansas State tested positive to COVID-19.

The Golden Hurricane will next face the unbeaten UCF Knights at Orlando’s Bright House Networks Stadium this Saturday October 4. The game will be screened on ESPN2.

Wilson, who is the son of Heidelberg president Tim, is also studying a Business Studies degree at University of Tulsa.
