Women’s Review – May 11

Teams are starting to make their mark across all three divisions in our senior women’s competition as we enter the post-grading period.

Heidelberg Golf Club Division 1

Reigning premiers St Mary’s made it five wins from five with a 45-point victory over Eltham at Telfer Reserve. After trailing at quarter time the Burra took a 10-point lead at the main break before a seven goal to one second half saw them defeat the Panthers 9.6 (60) to 2.3 (15). Meg Girolami and Sarah Johnston combined for seven of St Mary’s nine goals while Jess Fitzpatrick starred alongside Emmison Zealley. Lily Harris continued her great start to life at Eltham while Michaela Molenberg kicked the only two goals for them.

Banyule welcomed back West Preston-Lakeside to Division 1 with a 51-point victory at J.E. Moore Park. The Bears extended their advantage in each quarter and kicked 8.1 in the second half in the 12.8 (80) to 4.5 (29) victory. Olivia Mincone kicked another six goals for Dan Sheean’s side after kicking six against Darebin the round prior. Olivia Perillo and Ashleigh Snow were two of the better performers on the day for their respective sides.

Diamond Creek Women’s 1 moved a game clear in second spot on the table after defeating Montmorency 1 by 26-points at Plenty Park Oval. Angelo Lamanna’s side won all four quarters on the day enroute to the 8.6 (54) to 4.4 (28) victory. Stephanie Rozario excelled in the victory alongside Grace Farrah while Linda Thorp kicked five goals to make it 21 goals this season. Madeleine Gallagher starred again for the Magpies alongside Kasey Lennox.

Heidelberg moved into third on the Division 1 table after defeating Ivanhoe by 69 points at Ivanhoe Park. Craig Hayes’ team were consistent across the four quarters, kicking 13.11 (89) and keeping the Ivies to 3.2 (20) in what was their first game in the top-flight of the women’s competition. The Tigers had seven individual goalkickers and were led in attack and midfield by Nikki Watts who finished with three goals. Rebekah Miller and Mia Tascone were also solid in the victory.

Cleaning Melbourne Division 2

Fitzroy Stars made it three wins from four after they defeated newcomers Kilmore by 10 goals at Sir Doug Nicholls Oval. The Stars kicked eight goals to one in the opening half to lead by 43 points at the main break before a five goal to three second half saw them secure the 13.11 (89) to 4.5 (29) win. Jessica Bamblett kicked four goals in her first game for the Stars this season and was well supported by Amina Keegan who also kicked four. Medika Bonney and Chiara Nardo were two of the better players for their respective sides.

Darebin 1 and South Morang played out a draw in their matchup at A.H. Capp Reserve. The Falcons trailed at all three breaks, including by nine points at three quarter time, before they kicked the first two goals of the last to snatch the lead. A late South Morang goal then helped them secure two points, with both sides locked on 4.5 (29). Portia Greenacre starred for the Falcons yet again while Hailey Cordova continued her great start to the season and was one of eight goalkickers for either side in the match.

Hurstbridge won their first game of Division 2 footy in the women’s competition with a four-goal win over Panton Hill at A.E Cracknell Reserve. Josh Swift’s side kicked three goals to just one behind in the opening term and were able to slightly increase that buffer throughout the game, eventually claiming the 6.7 (43) to 2.7 (19) win. Kirsty Steven and Ruby Butterfield continued their terrific start to 2025 alongside Caitlin Kennedy while Monique Ramsay fought hard all day for the Redbacks.

Lower Plenty returned to Division 2 in style with a 59-point win over local rivals Greensborough at Montmorency Park South Oval. After being locked up at quarter time the Bears kicked nine goals and conceded just one in the final three quarters enroute to an 11.15 (81) to 3.4 (22) win. Hayley Brown, Amellia Mullane and Milla Fereday all starred in the win, with Brown and Mullane kicking seven goals between them. Olivia Angwin and Bridgette Taylor-Gray fought gallantly for the Borough.

NFNL Division 3 Women’s

Epping secured their second-biggest victory since joining the women’s competition last year with a 55-point win over Darebin 2 in the early afternoon game at A.H. Capp Reserve. The Blues kicked their highest ever score to date in the women’s competition, finishing up on 11.10 (76) and keeping Darebin 2 to 3.3 (21). Simone Burridge starred with five goals while Cindy Turnbull had another terrific performance. Lilah Summers Dixon also starred in her first of two games on the day alongside Christina Cauchi.

Diamond Creek Women’s 2 kicked off a big afternoon for the Creekers with a 102-point victory over Laurimar at Plenty Park Oval. In their first game at the Division 3 level since Round 14 last year, the Creekers kept Laurimar scoreless and kicked 14.18 (102) themselves. Grace Addamo kicked five goals for the Creekers while Laura Di Domenica, Poppy Strickland, Isabella Hazelwood-Smith and Stefanie Memos had stellar performances.

Heidelberg West made it three wins from their last four games with a 23-point victory over Wallan at Greenhill Reserve. Despite kicking an inaccurate 5.12 (42), the Hawks were in control for majority of the contest and kept Wallan to 3.1 (19). Amee Gibson and Emily O’Keefe both finished with two goals each while Chloe Rowan was yet again sublime in midfield. Krystal Draper was one of the Magpies best players on the day.

Montmorency 2 made it two wins from their last three games with a seven-goal win over Reservoir at Crispe Park. The Magpies kept Reservoir to just 0.1 (1) and kicked 6.7 (43) themselves, with four of their goals coming in the opening half. Jasmine Ellis and Olivia Nesci were key in the Magpies victory and were one of five individual goalkickers for their side. Giuseppina Tarantello and Natalie Bozzi also performed admirably for Troy Lange’s side.

North Heidelberg made it four wins so far in season 2025 with an eight-goal victory over Whittlesea at the Whittlesea Showgrounds. The Bulldogs kicked five of their seven goals in the second and third terms to secure the 7.7 (49) to 0.1 (1) win away from home. Meg Harper and Sarah Bentley starred in the win while Bulldogs captain Teresa Cassar kicked three goals. For the Eagles, Eden Attard had another terrific performance alongside Tara Jenner.

Macleod made it consecutive wins for the first time in the women’s competition with a 40-point win over division newcomers Thomastown at Main Street Reserve. Joel Steindl’s side kicked six goals and kept the Bears to just one behind in the opening three quarters in the 7.12 (54) to 2.2 (14) win. Mia Jackson had an outstanding performance, kicking four of the Roos seven goals, and was one of their best players alongside Ally Gunstone and Kayla North. Abbigail Serong kicked the Bears two goals while Ruby Pantisano starred in her debut with the Bears.
