2014 Senior Best and Fairest Results

Published on Thursday, September 25, 2014

NORTHCOTE PARK captain Bronik Davies and Lower Plenty midfielder Matthew Vasilevski were the joint winners of the 2014 Frank Rosbrook Trophy.

Davies became a dual winner of the Division 1 best and fairest after sharing the award with Matthew Dennis in 2012.

Vasilevski’s triumph came in a year of great improvement for Lower Plenty, who rose to become a genuine finals contender throughout the 2014 season after two years at the bottom end of the Division 1 ladder.

Davies and Vasilevski polled 23 votes to win an enthralling count by one vote from Macleod’s Justin White. White’s second-place finish was a fine effort after missing four games through injury between rounds 4 to 7.

There was a four-way tie for third place, with Matthew Dennis (Bundoora), Michael Hooper (Greensborough), Daniel Keenan (Montmorency) and Tom Rogers (Eltham) all finishing on 16 votes.

Davies led the count by one vote from Vasilevski and White heading into the final round of the home and away season.

White failed to poll a vote in his side’s Round 18 loss to Heidelberg, before Vasilevski tied the count with a one-vote game in his side’s season-ending loss to Northcote Park.

Tyler Scarce was the runaway winner of the Division 2 best and fairest. The young Panton Hill captain polled 24 votes in his club’s first season back in second division.

Mernda midfielder Les Adams and North Heidelberg super boot Shane Harvey shared second place on 16 votes, while Malcolm Dow (Fitzroy Stars) and Jeff Ryan (North Heidelberg) finished equal third on 13 votes.

The Division 3 best and fairest was also shared, with Thomastown’s Matthew Cupo and Reservoir’s Danny O’Sullivan both polling 17 votes.

The duo finished three votes ahead of Mitch Buckley (South Morang) and five ahead of James McLean-Brunton (Heidelberg West) and Jacob Osei-Duro (Thomastown).

O’Sullivan couldn’t be beaten heading into the final round, while Cupo’s three-vote effort in Round 19 helped him tie for the award.

It capped off a great season for Cupo who also won the best on ground medal in Thomastown’s grand final win over Reservoir.

Montmorency’s Jesse Donaldson was awarded the Division 1 Coaches Player of the Year after another consistent season in the midfield for the Magpies.

Shane Harvey took out the Division 2 award from the coaches, while a strong finish to the season enabled Jarryd Allan to win the Division 3 coaches award.

The netball Section 1 best and fairest was a tie between Jacinta Tonkin of Bundoora Comets and Natasha Skehan of Whittlesea.

Other netball best and fairest award winners were: Sarah Vaughan (Northcote Park 1, Section 2), Jessica Beaton (St Mary’s 1, Section 3), Clare Derham (St Mary’s 2, Section 4), Dakota Craven (Mernda, Section 5), Shae Audley (Hurstbridge 1, Section 6), Avril Stanley (North Heidelberg 4, Section 7) and Holly Ditchfield (Montmorency, Section 8).

Panton Hill was named the 2014 Senior Club of the Year, while Daniel Philp was awarded Senior Umpire of the Year.
