The pair polled 18 votes to finish two votes clear of Montmorency teammates Daniel Keenan and Patrick Fitzgerald. Greensborough big man Joel McLellan rounded out the top five with 15 votes.
Davies, who guided the Cougars to the Grand Final this year, looked set to claim a runaway win after polling nine votes in a four-week purple patch between rounds 11-14, before a hamstring injury ruled him out of the final three home and away games of the season.
A two-vote effort in Bundoora’s Round 17 win over Eltham enabled Dennis to claim a share of the spoils. Dennis polled in 10 matches and polled maximum votes on three occasions.
Keenan’s second-place finish makes him one of the most decorated players in the League’s history, following back-to-back wins in 2008-09 and a third-place finish in 2011.
Fitzroy Stars midfielder Lionel Proctor claimed his second best and fairest trophy with a clear victory in the Division 2 vote count – adding to his 2008 best and fairest win.
The Stars’ skipper polled 21 votes to finish five clear of North Heidelberg forward Shane Harvey and Epping rover Luke Lirosi. Young Diamond Creek ruckman finished outright third on 15 votes in his first season with the Demons.
Proctor received best afield honours on six occasions, while Harvey’s second-place finish was a remarkable achievement given he missed the opening five games of the season while playing for Southport.
In Division 3, Rohan Davies’ capped off a sensational season by adding the competition best and fairest to his trophy cabinet.
The Mernda premiership captain polled 30 votes to finish well clear of Reservoir’s Jarrod Skinner on 23 votes. Competition leading goal kicker, Jonathon Byron, finished third with 15 votes.
Davies polled votes in 10 of his 16 home and away matches and polled three votes on eight separate occasions.
It capped off a wonderful 2012 season for Davies who earlier this month guided Mernda to a 93-point Grand Final win over Panton Hill – the club’s first premiership in 21 years as it returned to Division 2 after a one-year absence.
Following its season of on-field dominance, Mernda took out the Senior Club of the Year award.
