Bears maul Lions in wet

THOMASTOWN has continued its unbeaten start to the 2014 Division 3 season with an impressive 70-point win over South Morang in Round 4.

Despite wet conditions, the Bears were able to pile on 20 goals for the second consecutive time at home, to run away with the 20.13 (133) to 9.9 (63) win at Main Street Reserve.

Michael Di Battista starred up forward for the Bears in sloppy conditions, kicking five goals in a best on ground performance.

Jacob Osei-Duro was able to kick three to take his total to 17 for the season, whilst Tristain Harrower and David Folino were also able to slot three.

For the Lions, Ashley Hobbs and Lachlan Buckley were able to kick three goals apiece.

Heading into the game on the back of a big away win at Reservoir, the Bears were able to again get out of the blocks quickly, kicking the first three majors of the game.

South Morang looked sluggish early following a 21-day break between its most recent game – when it defeated Heidelberg West in Round 2.

The Lions were able to settle though, and in impressive fashion, kicking five of the next six majors to take a six-point lead into the first break.

As the rain began to fall, neither side was able to grab a distinct advantage during the second term. The Lions were able to nab two late goals to take a slim advantage going into the main break.

Whatever Dean Sinclair said to his troops at half-time certainly worked as Thomastown started the second half with a bang.

The Bears kicked seven goals to one in the third quarter to take a near unassailable 35-point lead into the final term.

The home side didn’t let up in the final quarter, slotting another six goals to one to cap off an impressive day with a percentage-boosting victory.

Even as the rain began to fall, the Bears were able to maintain a high skill level and managed to move the ball forward with ease.

When the ball was inside the 50m arc, their forwards were able to capitalise and use it well to hit the scoreboard. It has become a hallmark of the Bears game in 2014, with the team averaging 129 points per game in the opening month of the season.

Next week, Thomastown will face Heidelberg West at home in a top of the table clash, while South Morang will head home and look to pick up its second win of the season when it faces St Mary’s.

Final score: Thomastown 20.13 (133) def South Morang 9.9 (63)
