Great start to Junior Metro Champs

Published on Thursday, May 29, 2014

The Northern Football League has made a superb start to the 2014 National Sports Museum Metropolitan Junior Championships, winning four of its five games.

The league’s four boys teams all defeated the Riddell District Football League (RDFL), while our girls team was gallant in defeat against a strong Yarra Junior Football League (YJFL) outfit.

The Under-15 Division 1 team came from behind to win, booting eight goals to three after half time. Anthony Fable was named best, while Ben Peterson kicked four goals.

The Under-15 Division 2 side also finished with a late charge. Leading by 11 points at three quarter time, the boys booted four goals to nil in the final term to win by 37 points. David Paolino and Adrian De Sando were amongst the best.

In the closest game of the night, the Under-14 Division 1 team rallied from 16 points behind at half time to win an 11-point thriller at LaTrobe Univeristy. Oliver Potter and Mitch Wild led the way, while Adrian Kalcovski kicked three goals.

The biggest win came from the Under-14 Division 2 side, which claimed a 68-point victory at Romsey Park. Leading by 28 points at the main break, the boys didn’t relent in the second half as they finished with four goals to one in each of the final two quarters. Ethan Arena was best afield, while Max Keith was the leading goal kicker on the ground with three.

Despite falling to a loss, the Under-16 Girls never game up in a 62-point defeat to the YJFL. Tayla Hardiman was the NFL’s best and kicked the team’s only goal, while Larissa Cullen and Hinako Eyre were also amongst the better players.

The sides next play on Saturday, June 7 before playing the final match of the round-robin stage on Monday, June 9.
