Greensborough lifted itself off the bottom of the Meadows Greyhounds Division 1 ladder with a hard-fought nine-point win over Hurstbridge.

Inaccuracy cost both sides throughout the match, but the Boro were able to prevail 11.15 (81) to 10.12 (72) at Ben Frilay Oval in Round 7.

The result gave the Boro their second-straight victory after recording their breakthrough win for the season at Heidelberg a week prior.

Such is the evenness of the competition, the Boro are now just a win outside the top-five despite looking in relegation trouble just a fortnight ago.

Brody Tickell was named best on ground in an impressive display, also contributing a goal, in his side’s win.

Adrian Cataldo was a strong contributor, while Josh Grubb booted four majors for the away side, including three in a dominant ten-minute burst in the third term.

Corey Cogan and Jason Rogers were the other multiple goal scorers for the Boro, kicking three and two goals respectively.

For Hurstbridge, Sean Jellie was impressive in defeat, slotting two majors. He received good support from Troy and Trent Barbero, while Daniel Francis was influential and kicked two majors.

It was a scrappy affair early on, with neither side able to gain clean possession of the ball.

Greensborough held the ball in its forward line for much of the opening five minutes but was unable to convert and Daniel Francis made the Boro pay at the other end.

The visitors then switched on, kicking three of the next four goals to take a nine-point lead into quarter time.

The Bridges turned the tides early in the second term, kicking the first three goals to reverse their quarter time deficit.

Goals to Cogan and Rogers settled the Boro, however they still went into the main break three points adrift.

The second half began much like the first, with neither side able to gain clean possession in their forward half of the ground.

Enter Josh Grubb, who began marking everything kicked in his direction and kicked truly to give his side an eight-point lead heading into the final change.

The home side looked as though it would run over the top of the Boro early in the last term, with a Francis goal in the first minute and a superb running goal from the boundary from Tieren Barbera getting the home crowd buzzing.

However it wasn’t to be for Hurstbridge, with the cool heads of Cogan and Rogers kicking crucial goals to steady the ship for Greensborough and give their side its second win of 2017.

Following the Queen’s Birthday weekend break Greensborough will be looking for its third-straight win when it hosts bottom-placed Whittlesea.

Hurstbridge will be looking to bounce back when it travels to Montmorency Park to take on fifth-placed Montmorency.

Final score: Hurstbridge 10.12 (72) def by Greensborough 11.15 (81)
