MELBOURNE Vixens goal keeper Geva Mentor was a special guest at Greensborough Netball Club’s training session last Wednesday.

Standing at 188cm, Mentor is the starting goal keeper for the 2014 ANZ Championship premiers and also plays in the England national team.

A two-time premiership player in the ANZ Championship, Mentor’s impressive list of netball achievements include:

• ANZ Championship All Star GK (2012, 2013, 2014)
• Melbourne Vixens MVP (2012, 2014), Melbourne Vixens R/UP MVP (2013)
• Competition leader in intercepts and deflections in the ANZ Championship (2013)
• Commonwealth Games (England) (2002, 2006, 2010, 2014)
• World Netball Championships (England) (2003, 2007, 2011)

After winning the Northern Netball League’s Section 2 premiership last season, defence was the key focus of the special training session as Greensborough continues to work through its pre-season training program.

Greensborough’s four teams were divided into two squads, with each squad being coached by Geva for 40 minutes in a number of footwork, defence and timing drills.

Greensborough assistant Coach Natalie Jolley said the playing group had taken plenty out of the session with Mentor.

“Geva was amazing and all defenders should take note from what they learnt,” Jolley said.

“It’s clear that she’s a natural coach and she took time out to speak with almost every one of our 40 players and provide valuable one on one feedback.”

Greensborough netball president Jacqui Martin said the playing group had appreciated the invaluable lessons they learned from the international star.

“Geva was an absolute pleasure to have at training and it was an invaluable experience for our club to have someone of such a high international standard to teach our netballers, who range in age from 15 right through to late 30s,” she said.

“She was lovely, encouraging and you can easily see why she is one of the world’s favourite netballers.”

GNC would like to thank Geva Mentor, Netball Victoria and the Melbourne Vixens for this wonderful opportunity.
