Cougars end Boro’s dominance

The Cougars booted six goals to one in the first term and never looked back as they raced to a 14.15 (99) to 8.13 (61) victory over the Boro.

On a beautiful day at Preston City Oval, it was a case of first versus second in the premiership-decider, with Greensborough looking to get one back after losing all three previous encounters against the Cougars this year.

However, Northcote Park came out firing with three goals in the opening ten minutes through Jake Abbatangelo, with two great goals from set shots, and one from Billy Abou-eid.

Dylan Rowe got things under way for Greensborough with a nice handpass over the top for an easy goal, but that was quickly cancelled out by Jake Abbatangelo who got his third of the quarter after marking 30m out directly right in front.

Moments later his fourth came after taking possession in the goal square.

It was a dream start for the Cougars and for the Abbatangelo’s just days after Jake’s brother, Ben, took out the under-19 competition best and fairest award.

Northcote Park got one more for the quarter and at the first break alarm bells were already ringing for Greensborough who was struggling to get its hand on the football and trailed by 30 points as a result.

The Cougars picked up where they left off in the second quarter, getting the first goal but Greensborough became determined and was not going to lay down.

Its second goal came through Matt Hunt as the Boro were able to close down Northcote Park’s run and spread on the outside, making for a much more contested brand of football.

For the rest of the quarter the Boro managed to keep the Cougars scoreless, but unfortunately they were not able to have any impact on the scoreboard themselves as they headed into the main break still down by 28 points, but playing much better football.

Kane Slater got Northcote Park back to its destructive ways in the third quarter, kicking the next three goals all from set shots in a scintillating personal display.

Dylan Rowe got his second for the day for Greensborough, but it was all in vain as Slater booted his fourth of the quarter after getting on the end of a chain of four great handpasses and volleying the ball out of mid-air.

After going quiet in the second term, Jake Abbatangelo got his fifth of the day to round out the quarter with Northcote leading by 50 points – an unassailable margin.

Greensborough started the final quarter on a better note, getting the first two goals of the quarter, including another from Matt Hunt for his second.

The Cougars halted the Boro’s momentum with the next major, but intent on winning at least one quarter, the Boro hit back through Luke McCann who got his side’s third of the term.

The sides traded goals for the final ten minutes as Northcote Park held on for a 38-point victory.

After winning 17 of 19 games in the 2012 season, it was a deserving premiership win for the young Cougars.

Joel Donaldson was named best afield after a dominant display through the midfield. The premiership and best on ground medals capped off a sensational week for the youngster who also finished equal third in the competition best and fairest award with teammate Harley Short.

The under-19s win began a memorable day for the Northcote Park Football Club who also claimed the senior premiership later in the afternoon following a comfortable 45-point win over Heidelberg – the club’s first senior premiership in a decade.
