Five minutes with AFL VIC SEDA student Mitchell Griska

Published on Wednesday, June 18, 2014

Mitchell Griska is in his second year of the AFL VIC SEDA Sport Development Program and is currently under taking work placement with AFL Victoria within the NFL office.

We asked him a few questions about the program and his work placement within the league’s headquarters.

1. What is your opinion of the AFL VIC and SEDA program?
“I think it is a wonderful program for students who want to get out of the class room more often and who aspire to be involved in the sporting industry. Applying for the program has to be one of the best decisions I have ever made.”

2. What aspects do you like about the program?
“SEDA offers a lot more than just sitting in the class room doing work. We get to go out to other schools and run football clinics for them on a weekly basis. Each class is also aligned with an AFL club. For me, it’s Carlton so we are involved in many different events with them throughout the year as we work alongside the full Carlton playing list.”

3. What roles/tasks are you responsible for in the NFL?
“Currently, I am on work placement at the NFL. I am responsible for many roles and am exposed to different tasks within each department.”

4. What have you learned from your work placement within the NFL office?
“With my work placement at AFL Victoria/NFL I have been lucky enough to have a look at what happens behind the scenes at a sporting organisation.  It has really opened my eyes and given me perspective into what people in the sporting industry do on a daily basis. As well as that, it has given me the opportunity to explore many different career paths that I could see myself doing after I finish my schooling with SEDA.”

5. How did you find working out in the community with AFL VIC/NFL?
“I really enjoy going out and running clinics and events in the local community, as it is great seeing other people enjoy what they are doing and it gives you a confidence boost knowing that people are enjoying the work you are doing and you are making a difference in the community.”

6. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
“I’d like to say I know exactly but I don’t just yet. I am still learning about many different opportunities that the sporting industry has to offer, but I can say that being at SEDA has given me a really good insight to what life has to offer and the pathways you can take.”
