A MULTI-CULTURAL family sports day will be held in Heidelberg West to celebrate the suburb’s sporting heritage, as well as its diversity as a multi-cultural community.

The event will take place on Sunday, March 2 at Shelley Park (Shelley Street, Heidelberg West), commencing at 10am.

There will be a host of sporting activities and competitions for children and teenagers to participate in, while a jumping castle and a free barbeque lunch have been organised.

Those who attend will also be provided information about becoming an umpire and how to earn money an income while keeping fit. There will also be opportunities to join a local sporting club.

The day is being backed by many of the area’s most influential organisations, including the Australian Sports Commission, AFL Victoria, Collingwood Football Club, the Somali Australian Council of Victoria (SACOV), Victoria Police, Department of Justice, Banyule Council, North Heidelberg Football Club and Heidelberg Stars Soccer Club.

Mayor of Banyule, Cr Craig Langdon, said sport played a vital role in uniting local communities.

“Sport is a great way to bring together people of different cultural backgrounds to share in a common passion,” Cr Langdon said.

He said Heidelberg West’s rich sporting heritage stemmed back to 1956, when it became the site of the athletes’ village for the Melbourne Olympic Games.

Since then, the area has regularly been the first Australian home for migrant groups from all parts of the globe.

North Heidelberg Junior Football Club president Christie Delauney said her club will provide a free club cap to the first 50 kids under 14 years of age who attend.

It will be an alcohol free event.
