Junior review – Round 11

A LOOK back at last weekend’s junior results.

The Under 18 Girls competition saw four one-sided games as the top three teams showed their finals ambitions. South Morang remains undefeated, easily accounting for Montmorency away from home. Darebin Falcons Womens remains in second after they defeated Hurstbridge comfortably, while Diamond Creek Womens sits third after defeating Mernda by 53 points. Epping kept Eltham scoreless in a win that moved the Pingers into fifth place on the table.

In the Under 17 Blue competition, Diamond Creek and Montmorency played out one of the lowest scoring encounters of the round, with the Creekers winning the top of the table clash 0.15 (15) to 1.5 (11). Jess Baird and Tyler Barnes led the way for the Creekers in extremely tough conditions. The win moved the Creekers atop the ladder, two points ahead of the Magpies.

South Morang beat Epping by 72 points to move into third spot on the ladder. West Preston was the other winner, beating Research by five points in a thriller to sit equal third along with the Searchers and Lions. The Roosters held off a last quarter fight back from the Searchers, who kicked five goals for the quarter, but two crucial goals saw the Roosters get over the line.

Diamond Creek produced a stunning upset in the Under 17 Red competition, beating ladder-leader Eltham and ending its long unbeaten run at the same time, by two points. The Creekers came from behind to get the win and were led by Lachlan Murphy and Danyon Kambouris. The close matches kept on coming as Wallan produced an amazing fight back to defeat Yarrambat by a single point. Trailing by 19 points at the final break, the Magpies, led by Joshua Bayre and Liam Clayton, were able to keep the Bats scoreless for the last term to get the win. Hurstbridge also got a win, beating Northcote by 17 points to grab a share of equal first on the ladder.

The Under 16 Blue competition saw South Morang stretch its unbeaten streak to 11 games, with a big win over Montmorency at Montmorency Park. The Lions were led by Matthew Signorello and Jackson Smith, who booted seven goals. Eltham and Research played out a tight encounter, with the Panthers producing a 14-point turnaround to win by seven points. Jacey Winter and Jay Smith led the way for the Panthers, seeing them move a step closer to a top-two place. Mill Park was the round’s other winner, defeating Epping by 67 points at Redleap Reserve.

South Morang kept its long winning run alive as it remained atop the Under 15 Blue ladder, with a comprehensive win over West Preston. Ahmad Ahmad and Anthony Fable led the way for the Lions, whilst Ethan Penrith and Adrian Mercuri were the best for the Roosters in defeat. Epping and Wallan were also victorious, smashing Research and Greensborough respectively by big margins.

The Under 15 Red competition saw Yarrambat move to the top of the table, beating previous ladder- leader Diamond Creek by 18 points. The Bats were led by Martin Sin and Brady Parsons. Montmorency was also able to record a win, producing an upset over third-placed Eltham by six points. Jordy Greenway led the way for the Magpies, booting three goals for the match. He was assisted by Blake Charles who also chimed in with two.

In the Under 15 Green competition, Epping shocked the competition, producing a draw with the previous ladder-leader Bundoora Park. Unable to produce their best in the first half, the Bolts were able to rally in the second half to tie the match in the dying stages. Keon Park also got a win, beating Kinglake by 49 points. Whittlesea had the bye.

South Morang kept its unbeaten run alive in the Under 14 Blue competition, beating Montmorency by 54 points. Eltham and Epping fought out a tough match in the battle to avoid bottom place, with the Panthers getting the win by four points. Laurimar Black also recorded a win, beating West Preston by 33 points.

In the Under 13 Blue competition, South Morang Blue won its 10th consecutive match after accounting for Mill Park at Mill Park Lakes Reserve. The Lions sit four points ahead of Whittlesea, who is eagerly awaiting them to slip up after they put aside Epping by 25 points. The other winner was Montmorency, who produced an upset against third-placed Greensborough. The win leaves the Magpies just two points outside the top four.

The Under 12 Blue competition sees Eltham sit atop the table after 11 rounds, following a 29-point win over Mill Park. The Panthers sit six points clear of Research, who beat Diamond Creek by 30 points at Coventry Oval. The other winner was Wallan, who defeated South Morang Blue by six points to move a step closer to a top three spot.

Yarrambat kept rolling along in the Under 11 Blue competition, beating Eltham by 51 points at Eltham Central Park to continue its undefeated season. They Bats sit atop the ladder, some six points clear of their nearest rival, South Morang Blue, who beat Epping by 10 points. The other winner was Greensborough, who sits in third after a nine-point win over Montmorency.
