Published on Thursday, April 17, 2014

LET’S take a look back at last weekend’s junior results, as teams look to get off to a positive start to the 2014 season.

Beginning with the Under-18 Girls, where Darebin Falcons and Montmorency played out a tight game, with the Falcons prevailing by three goals over an inaccurate Magpies’ outfit. Elsewhere, there were big wins for Epping, Diamond Creek Women’s and South Morang.

In the Under 17 Blue competition, recently promoted Epping have bounced back after a Round 1 shocker against Research, beating Northcote by 46 points. Top of the table Research continued its winning start to the year, coming from behind to defeat a gallant Montmorency by 17 points. Coming off the bye last week, South Morang had the fresher legs as it ran on top of Diamond Creek, winning by 26 points at Mill Park Lakes Reserve, whilst West Preston had the bye.

Hurstbridge sits atop the ladder in the Under 17 Red competition after two weeks, remaining undefeated after beating Eltham by 20 points at Ben Frilay Oval. Diamond Creek got on the winners list by beating Mill Park by 49 points. Yarrambat was also a big winner, thrashing Wallan by 114 points to record its first win of the year.

The Under 16 Blue competition sees three teams undefeated after the opening two rounds. South Morang and Mill Park sit atop the ladder, after both recording wins over 100 points against Research and Montmorency. Eltham is also 2-0 at the Easter break after beating Epping by 10 points in a tight encounter, with a strong start giving the Panthers the edge.

South Morang continued its winning start in the Under 15 Blue competition, beating recently promoted West Preston by a big margin – the second week in a row that the Lions have recorded a win by over 150 points. Wallan was the other victor in Round 2, beating Greensborough by eight points in a tight encounter at Wallan Recreational Reserve. Epping had the bye and is still undefeated and takes on South Morang after the Easter break, setting up a mouth-watering clash between the two dominant sides in the Under 15 age group.

Diamond Creek caused an upset in the Under 15 Red competition, beating Eltham who came down from Blue division this season by 26 points. The win puts the Creekers at the top of the ladder. Also undefeated is Research, who beat strong Yarrambat outfit by 93 points in a dominant display at Research Park. Whittlesea upset Bundoora Park by 15 points, coming from behind to beat the Thunderbolts.

Another side who had a loss before the break was Keon Park, with last year’s grand finalists going down to Epping by 13 points. Mill Park was the other victors in Round 2, beating newcomers Kinglake by a massive margin. Montmorency had the bye.

In the Under 15 Girls, Mill Park remained undefeated after a close battle with Eltham Black where it prevailed by 11 points. Comfortable wins were recorded by Diamond Creek Women’s, South Morang and Montmorency. After two weeks, three sides are locked at the top of the table – Montmorency, South Morang and Mill Park.

West Preston got its first win on the board in the Under 14 Blue competition, defeating Mill Park in a tight contest by 15 points. South Morang continued its unbeaten run, beating Montmorency by 34 points. But that was as close as the round 2 results went, with Laurimar Black and Eltham both recording huge wins over Whittlesea and Wallan respectively.

In the Under 13 Blue competition, South Morang Blue record its second consecutive win over 100 points after it smashed Montmorency away from home. Whittlesea also remains undefeated, beating Epping by 78 points. Mill Park had the bye.

The Under 12 Blue competition sees Wallan atop the table after keeping its unbeaten start intact, defeating Mill Park by 20 points. South Morang Blue bounced back from its close loss to Wallan last week, by defeating Diamond Creek by 65 points. Research was the other competitions over winner, comfortably accounting for Greensborough at Beale Oval.

And in the Under-11s, Yarrambat have kept its two-year unbeaten run intact in the Under 11 Blue competition, beating last year’s premier South Morang Blue by 17 points in a hard-fought win. The Bats sit atop the ladder but chopping at their heels are Montmorency, who remain unbeaten after defeating Epping by nine points. The big winners this week were Greensborough, getting their first win on the board after beating Eltham by 49 points at Eltham Central Park.
