Lions eclipse Comets

SOUTH MORANG 2 narrowly defeated Bundoora Comets 3 by five goals in a close game that only opened up in the final minutes.

The win enabled South Morang to move into second place on the Section 3 ladder.

Early on in the game South Morang looked the superior team with its quick movement into the circle giving its shooters many opportunities.

However these chances were wasted due to inaccurate shooting from the Lions’ attackers, Bianca Waligora and Nakita Lastrina.

Bundoora also made errors throughout the quarter that could’ve given it the lead.

A poor goal keeper throw in into South Morang’s attacking third was not capitalised upon, despite Bundoora’s shooters taking three shots at goal.

Aside from missing these goals, long-range shots did not seem to concern Bundoora goal attack Emily Duggan, who shot three goals from around the circle as both teams entered the second quarter level on the scoreboard.

Bundoora improved its movement around its goal circle and the ball spent most of the quarter in the Comets’ attacking third.

However poor throws from Bundoora meant the ball was often turned over as South Morang’s solid defensive pressure at times even resulted in a held ball call against the Comets.

South Morang scored three unanswered goals to end the quarter and it entered the half-time break with a four-goal lead.

However Bundoora was not about to let the Lions get too far ahead in the game.

It fought back to score the first four goals of the quarter with a long-range goal from Emily Williams drawing the scores level again.

Both teams continued to go goal-for-goal to end the quarter, as South Morang led by one goal going into the final quarter.

Bundoora evened up the game on the first centre pass of the quarter. Whilst they always had a reply to South Morang’s goals, the Comets never took the lead.

Quick and effective passing in the circle between Waligora and Lastrina was evident, as their accuracy for goal was much improved from the first half.

In the final minutes South Morang scored five goals and restricted Bundoora from scoring, as the Comets seemingly ran out of legs.

Elsewhere in Section 3, North Heidelberg 2 defeated St Mary’s by six goals, whilst Lalor 2 eased to a huge win over Laurimar Power 2.
