Montmorency 1 will enter the Winning Edge Division 1 women’s finals series with a heap of momentum following a gritty 11-point victory over Greensborough at Montmorency Park North Oval.

With the game on a knife’s edge throughout the entire afternoon, a final term major from the Magpies’ Sian Capito helped her side prevail 3.3 (21) to 1.4 (10).

The result sets up an intriguing qualifying final between Montmorency 1 and West Preston-Lakeside 1 this weekend as both sides finished the season with the same record.

Despite going down in the end, the Boro sneak into the final five after VU Western Spurs lost to Diamond Creek Women’s 1 on Sunday and are set to face Darebin 1 in an elimination final.

The result was also an improvement for Stan Lewis’ side who only four games earlier lost to the Magpies by 90 points.

The visitors got off to a quick start with a behind and then a goal from Caitlin McGrath in the opening few minutes.

Greensborough controlled the football for the majority of the quarter, but Montmorency’s backline stood tall with their rebound 50 work a strong asset to their game.

The term was mostly played in between the two arcs as Greensborough’s backline were also able to prevent Montmorency from notching up any score for a long period of the match.

That was until Jessica Nursey, converted a set shot from a free kick to score her side’s first goal.

The Boro held a two-point lead at quarter time off the back of Laffey’s major, the Magpies began to shift the momentum of the match.

After a scoring drought took place for most of the second term, Jemma Laffey, who was off the back of a 10-goal game against Lower Plenty-Bundoora last week, intercepted a Boro kick in and calmly slotted the set shot in the last moments of the half to give Montmorency a five-point lead at the main break.

The hosts couldn’t translate any of their second term momentum in the third quarter as possession alternated between the two sides frequently.

The Boro held control of the football more than the Magpies did, but they too didn’t make the most of their opportunities. The visitors did manage a behind to bring the deficit back to four points at three quarter time.

Looking to regain control of the match, Montmorency didn’t waste any time in the final term, scoring a goal in the first minute thanks to a set shot from Sian Capito.

In the low scoring affair, Capito’s goal sealed Greensborough’s fate for the day, as the Magpies ran away 11-point winners.
