Heidelberg West Football Netball Club have announced that Michael Missen will leave his post as senior coach following the conclusion of the 2023 season.

The club confirmed on Tuesday night that Missen would not seek re-appointment at the conclusion of the season but will stay put until the end of this year’s campaign.

Missen spent 11 years at the Hawks as a player between 2007 and 2017, making 59 senior appearances, before becoming the club’s reserves coach in his final playing year.

In 2019, Missen coached that reserves’ side to the Division 3 premiership, the club’s first silverware in any football competition since 1966.

He was soon appointed as coach of the senior team in 2020 and this season, the Hawks are still in the finals hunt, currently sitting outside the top four on percentage with two matches remaining.

A club statement said:

Senior coach Mick Missen informed our executive committee and playing group that he won’t be seeking re-appointment as our senior coach for the 2024 season.

After 7 years of contributing heavily to the rebuild of our football program firstly as reserves coach from 2017-2019 and then leading our club as senior coach from 2020-2023, Mick felt the time was right for a new voice and energy to step into the role to drive the club forward.

Mick has always gone above and beyond as senior coach he finishes with a positive win/loss record. He guided our reserves off the bottom of the ladder to play in 2 grand finals which included the 2019 premiership.

However most importantly he guided our club through the pandemic period and ensured our club returned stronger and more connected than before.

On behalf of the Heidelberg West community we thank Mick, his wife Adelle and 3 children Claire, William and Lincoln for there unwavering commitment to improving our club on and off the field, we wish you all the very best with your future endevours.
