EAGLES SPREAD THEIR WINGS

Whittlesea’s tight four-goal win over Lakeside in Round 9 kept the Eagles in touch with the top four on the Section 1 ladder.

Whittlesea’s passes flew down the court as the mid court players, particularly Jacinta Dwight threw piercing passes to their teammates.

However, Lakeside matched the Eagles with its speed down the court, creating a fast paced match.

Inaccurate shooting cost Whittlesea early as Lakeside dominated most of the term, leading to a three-goal lead at the quarter time break.

Whittlesea was solid defensively, causing a held ball call as Lakeside struggled to get the ball into its shooters.

Goal keeper Loren Weekes was also important as Whittlesea moved forward, consistently being an option to help the Eagles move the ball out of their defensive third.

Whittlesea was able to score a goal from consecutive errors by Lakeside as it put itself in front at the half-time break.

The Eagles lost this two-goal lead by the end of the third quarter.

Lakeside was able to use the advantage gained by Whittlesea goal defence Tash Skeham being sent off for two goals. It drew the scores level midway through the term, and it went one-goal up to start the final quarter.

The margin never stretched beyond two goals until the final minutes, as both teams played with determination to secure the win.

Whittlesea centre Dwight had been a key player for her team all match, and this continued into the last quarter. Her intercepts and movement into space helped Whittlesea score the final four goals to win 34-30 in a pulsating game.
