Section 1 Round 2 – North Heidelberg 1 vs Bundoora 1

The Round 2 match at RMIT came down to the final quarter as North Heidelberg took a one-goal win over Bundoora 1.

North scored the opening goal, but that was quickly followed up with two goals by Bundoora’s shooters, Elly Castles and Emily Williams.

The Bundoora girls worked the ball efficiently towards their shooters, however North Heidelberg defenders Tessa Willett and Shauna Ross worked well to keep the scores close.

Bundoora came out on top of the first quarter, leading 15-11.

Bundoora shot two quick goals in the opening of the second quarter after North Heidelberg lost possession within its shooting circle.

GS Megan La Rocca appeared to be less confident in her shots, passing off to Elly Castles, who scored the majority of the goals in the quarter.

The game remained tight with six minutes to go and a one-goal difference, Bundoora’s way.

A few back and forth movements of play between both teams saw North Heidelberg come out with a goal to close their deficit, and with seconds on the clock they managed to get the ball down their end to lead at half time, 25-24.

North kept its lead as GS Kate Butler got her eye in, scoring eight of her side’s 13 goals in the third quarter. Bundoora seemed to slip as North Heidelberg took control, leading 37-31.

The final quarter began and North Heidelberg moved the ball efficiently to their end of the court.

Bundoora kept fighting to stay in the game with good passages of play. With the ball at Bundoora’s attacking end, a contact call on North Heidelberg’s GD Shauna Ross opened an opportunity for Elly Castles to score.

Bundoora’s strong defence meant there was only a two-goal difference with three minutes to play.

An intercept and swift movement forward saw Bundoora close the gap to one goal.

With seconds left on the clock Bundoora had the centre pass but was unable to score, with North Heidelberg holding on in a thriller.

Final score: North Heidelberg 1 (50) def Bundoora 1 (49)

Section 3 Round 2 – Heat 1 vs North Heidelberg 2

The Round 2 Section 3 match between Heat 1 and North Heidelberg was a nail-biter, with North coming out on top by one goal.

North Heidelberg started with the centre pass and scored the first goal but Heat picked up and it was goal for goal in the opening minutes of the first quarter.

Heat lost a centre pass allowing for North Heidelberg to pull ahead, leading 5-2, before tight defence by both Veronica Cipriani and Cassie Wilcox saw North’s scoring streak end, as Heat then pushed forward to score a goal.

GS Michelle Kneale tied the scores at 5-5 and Heat then began to pull in front, taking the lead 7-6 with three minutes to go.

It was a low-scoring quarter by both teams as great defensive work proved too strong for the attackers, with scores locked at 9-9 at the end of the term.

North Heidelberg’s shooter Kylie Yelland put her side one goal ahead despite Heat earlier gaining possession from a contact call.

It was goal for goal for much of the second quarter and with four minutes to go on the clock, a strong quick passes by North Heidelberg’s C Sarah Heers moved the ball into her side’s circle.

The resulting goal gave North a 15-14 advantage at half time.

GS Kylie Yelland pushed North Heidelberg three goals ahead during the third quarter, before Heat’s GK Cassie Wilcox forced a held ball. Heat then got possession back and quick goals cut its deficit to just one at the end of the third quarter.

Heat was quick to start the fourth quarter with a goal, but North Heidelberg took back the lead with a quick reply.

Heat slowly got on top and with scores tied for much of the term, managed to soon open up a two-goal lead.

Heat WA Suzanna Dainton lost possession of the ball on the centre pass and North Heidelberg pounced on the error to score.

With 45 seconds to go in the match North’s GS Kylie Yelland converted to level the match at 28-all.

In the final four seconds of the game Heat GD Veronica Cipriani made contact in her defensive circle and North Heidelberg claimed a come-back win with a goal with the final shot of the game.

Final score: North Heidelberg 2 (29) def Heat 1 (28)
