NFL clarifies newspaper article

The NFL is currently conducting an investigation into a report that a West Preston-Lakeside player left the playing field during play to engage in a spectator dispute. At no stage has the NFL named the player involved nor has the NFL made any determination as to whether or not charges should be laid.

The nature of the spectator dispute is also under investigation however the notion that up to 50 people are “alleged to have brawled” is misleading and not factual. The nature of the dispute was minor, ended very quickly and was primarily between two individuals.

With regards to claims of racial vilification, no reports or complaints have been made prior to or at this stage of the investigation. The notion that Northcote Park supporters were responsible is firmly rejected by the club and not backed by any evidence or statements made to the League. The NFL would also like to correct the statement made by the paper that Northcote Park player Jake Mills was yellow-carded for striking. The player was given a card for a minor rough conduct offence which resulted in a free kick to an opposition player.

The NFL prides itself in providing a highly entertaining product in a safe and family-friendly environment. Misconception through powerful forums have the potential to undermine the enormous work the NFL does in the community. The NFL takes very seriously any action or incident that contravenes the laws of the game or has the potential to bring the game or the League into disrepute, and these will be dealt following established due process.
