NFNL Statement – Competition returns this weekend

Published on Wednesday, June 16, 2021

Football will return in the Northern Football Netball League this weekend, following Melbourne’s three-week lockdown, with a decision on netball still pending.

The resumption of netball is pending while the NFNL awaits approval to use the netball host venues. The NFNL will provide a netball update as soon as we have information from venue management.

The Victorian Government today announced further easing of restrictions across the state, which take effect from 11:59pm on Thursday 17 June.

Below is a summary of key changes from the government and what they mean for matches played this weekend.

Travel restrictions lifted:
• 25km travel restrictions have been lifted and people can now travel between regional Victoria and metro Melbourne.

Metro community sport:
• Competition for seniors and juniors can resume with the minimum number of people required to participate and facilitate the activity.
• Spectators not allowed (excludes people necessary for events such as teaches, instructors, trainers, coaches, umpires, carers, parents and guardians).

The NFNL acknowledges spectators not being permitted to attend this weekend’s matches is a major challenge for clubs, and a disappointing outcome for supporters.

However, we respectfully ask the entire NFNL community to please respect the protocols implemented by the Victorian Government for this weekend’s games.

These protocols have been put in place with the community’s health and safety the priority.

Getting back on the football field, and hopefully the netball court, this weekend is a major step towards community sport returning as we know and love it.

We ask that you please support us by following the protocols in place to ensure restrictions can be eased for all community sporting activities and events as soon possible.

Updated Return to Play protocols will be distributed to clubs once they are provided to AFL Victoria by the state government.

We thank the NFNL community for your assistance and understanding.
