GRANT Toms has been confirmed as Heidelberg West’s new coach.

Toms returns to Heidelberg West after serving as a playing assistant in 2012. He also took the reins as caretaker coach for three games that season, resulting in two wins.

A statement released by Heidelberg West welcomed Toms back to the club.

“The Heidelberg West Football Club is pleased to announce Grant Toms has been appointed senior coach for the 2016 season,” the statement read.

“After an exhausting interview process, which included several high quality candidates, we are pleased to have Grant taking charge for the upcoming season.

“Grant possesses great people management skills and combined with a wealth of knowledge attained through playing 15 years of first division football, including stints at Sandringham in the VFL, we believed Grant will get the best out of our young group as we strive to play finals football in 2016.”

Toms most recently coached Southern Football League side Cheltenham’s reserves, taking the side to this year’s Division 1 grand final.

He replaces Derek Shaw in the Hawks’ top job after Shaw accepted a position as senior coach of Eastern Football League club Whitehorse Pioneers.
