2013 Metropolitan Junior Championships wrap

The Northern Football League’s most promising youngsters were in action during the 2013 AFL Victoria Metropolitan Junior Championships.

The league’s best junior players from our Under-14, Under-15 and Youth Girls competitions represented the league with distinction over Queen’s Birthday weekend and on Wednesday, May 29.

While none of our five teams were able to progress through to the Grand Final of their grade, all five sides showed plenty of promise throughout their three fixtures.

The Under-14 Division 1 team were the closest to reaching a Grand Final, with just percentage keeping them from the showcase game. The side won two of its three matches, with their only loss coming against ladder leader Yarra Junior Football League who they lost to in a thriller by three points.

Vince Montagnese was named in the best two players in both victories, while Jack Gillespie kicked a team-high three goals in the 28-point win over South Metro Junior Football League.

After two losses in their opening two matches, the Under-14 Division 2 team finished their campaign off in style with a terrific 14-point win over South East Juniors on Monday.

Ryan Kennedy, Daniel Horsfield and David Paolino were named best in the 9.9 (63) to 7.7 (49) victory, where the Northern boys got off to a flying start and took a 34-point lead into quarter time.

The Under-15 Division 1 team went down to two close losses in the opening two rounds but also exited the competition on a winning note. After a close opening quarter against South East Juniors, the boys booted 12 of the final 13 goals of the game to run away with a 75-point win.

Matthew Signorello and Jack Taylor were named the best two on the field, while 11 different players booted goals in a magnificent team effort.

It was a similar tale for the Under-15 Division 2 team who lost their first two matches before recording a big win over South East Juniors in Round 3.

The boys booted 5.8 in the first quarter to take a 38-point lead into quarter time. They led by 58 points at three quarter time before finishing with a superb 47-point win at Narre Warren North Reserve.

Unfortunately the Youth Girls didn’t register a win, however the girls’ endeavour over the three matches was superb and their effort never waned.

They more than matched it with the Western Region Football League in Round 2, where they trailed by just one goal at three quarter time before going down by 18 points.

Well done to all those who represented the Northern Football League at the 2013 AFL Victoria Metropolitan Junior Championships and good luck at club level for the remainder of the 2013 season.
