2014 Best and Fairest Winners

THE best and fairest winners from all 25 NFL senior clubs have now been announced.

Michael Hooper capped off a sensational debut season at Greensborough, adding the club’s best and fairest award to his premiership medallion and best on ground medal in the Grand Final.

Ben Cosgriff became the inaugural winner of the Blair Harvey Medal – the new name for Heidelberg’s best and fairest award. The defender had a superb 2014 after missing the entire 2013 season with injury. He finished ahead of Paul Bower and Charles Gaylard.

Hamish Paynter won his first Macleod best and fairest ahead of Cathal Corr and John Andrew, while Kent Delbridge edged out Brayden Shaw to claim Bundoora’s club champion award.

A number of captains claimed Division 1 best and fairest trophies, with Darcy Barden (Lower Plenty), Ryan Jackson (Montmorency), Shaun Gannon and acting captain Andrew Fairchild (Whittlesea) winning their respective club’s award.

Tied Frank Rosbrook Trophy winners Bronik Davies and Matthew Vasilevski both ran second in their club award, with Davies beaten by Doug Morris for the Molloy Medal at Northcote Park, while Vasilevski was edged out by Barden at Lower Plenty.

Having only just turned 20, Billy Glasgow was the runaway winner of the Eltham best and fairest. Fellow youngsters Daniel Coffield and James Kroussoratis rounded out the top three places.

In Division 2, Jeff Ryan further demonstrated his importance in North Heidelberg’s premiership campaign, winning the Bulldogs’ best and fairest from Shane Harvey and Louis Hill.

Malcolm Dow won his second consecutive Fitzroy Stars best and fairest, while Daniel Moore made it an incredible six triumphs in a row when he claimed the Epping club champion award from Josh Stavely and Aaron Willitts.

In just his second season of senior football, Division 2 competition best and fairest winner Tyler Scarce took out the Panton Hill best and fairest. Les Adams, who finished second to Scarce in the Division 2 competition count, took out Mernda’s club award from Matthew Duggan.

Elsewhere, Hugh Kavanagh won the Diamond Creek best and fairest in his first season at the club, Shannon Smith took the trophy at Lalor and Aron Burns was club champion at Hurstbridge after booting 37 goals in just 12 games.

Matthew Cupo rounded out his huge season by winning Thomastown’s best and fairest. Cupo tied with Reservoir’s Danny O’Sullivan for the Division 3 competition best and fairest and was also best afield in Thomastown’s Grand Final win over the Mustangs.

O’Sullivan ran second to Daniel Cowenberg for Reservoir’s club champion award, while young defender Jake Potter finished ahead of Mitch Buckley and Nathan Moro in South Morang’s vote count.

Other winners from Division 3 were Shane McLaren (Parkside), Lee Minuz (St Mary’s), Hayden Mitchell (Watsonia) and Bradley Moore (Heidelberg West).
