A look back at all the highlights from the 2014 season.
The season started in superb fashion for the Northern Football League, with the return to senior representative football proving a massive success.
Despite going into its AFL Victoria Metro Championship clash against the Essendon District Football League as the underdog, the NFL led at every change to record a 13.9 (87) to 7.8 (50) victory at Visy Park.
Captain Ryan Jackson was adjudged best on ground, while Cameron Cloke and Jesse Donaldson each kicked three goals.
Senior football enjoyed another competitive season in the NFL, with the league’s
Division 1 competition enjoying the most evenly contested season of any of Melbourne’s senior football competitions.
Division 2 ranked fourth for competitiveness out of the 23 metropolitan senior competitions, while Division 3 produced a more competitive season than the lowest division in the EDFL, EFL, VAFA and WRFL.

In the NFL top flight, Greensborough broke a 25-year Division 1 premiership drought with a 39-point Grand Final win over old rival Heidelberg.
It was a year of huge improvement for the Boro, following an eight-place finish in 2013.
In club legend Robert Hyde’s last season as coach, Greensborough won 14 of 18 home and away matches. They managed to win the flag despite taking the long route to the Grand Final following a tight loss to Heidelberg in the second semi final.
Greensborough’s one-point loss in the reserves Grand Final denied it becoming the second team behind Reservoir-Lakeside in 1975 to win the Division 1 three-peat. West Preston-Lakeside claimed the thrilling reserves Grand Final with a goal with the last kick of the season.
The league’s innovation and leadership was demonstrated with the introduction of the 23rd Player Rule in Division 1, which proved a success and will be rolled out in Division 2 and 3 in 2015.
North Heidelberg had a dominant season in Division 2, claiming both the seniors and reserves premierships, while St Mary’s success in the under-19s gave the club its first football premiership in the NFL.
Thomastown won its first premiership since 2008 when it romped to the Division 3 flag with a dominant Grand Final performance over Reservoir. The Bears lost just one game all season under the guidance of Dean Sinclair.
Reservoir had some consolation with a comfortable win over South Morang in the Division 3 reserves premiership-decider.
The junior competitions continued to showcase the league’s outstanding junior talent, all while embracing the AFL’s new Junior Match Guide – a framework that provides the best possible journey for young players to progress their learning and development towards the adult version of the game.
The netball competition one again experienced fantastic growth – expanding to nine sections, which included the first-ever winter junior competition.
Diamond Creek continued its dominance in Section 1, winning its fifth consecutive premiership after a come-from-behind Grand Final win over Fitzroy Stars.
