After this year experiencing its closest season since the NFL’s expansion to three senior competitions, Division 2 looks set to enjoy another extremely competitive campaign in 2015.
Round 1 looks likely to set the tone for the season, with four key games scheduled for the opening round.
Mernda will begin life at new home Waterview Recreation Reserve when it takes on fellow 2014 finalist Lalor. The two have formed a healthy rivalry in recent seasons on the back of a number of thrilling matches.
Thomastown will unfurl its premiership flag against former Division 3 rival Panton Hill, while Whittlesea’s first game back in second division is at home against Diamond Creek.
Meantime, last year’s runner-up Fitzroy Stars hosts Hurstbridge, a side which looks very much on the up in 2015.
Panton Hill’s first three home matches of the season will be played in the twilight time slot, with the Redbacks taking on Whittlesea, Diamond Creek and Mernda in rounds 2, 4 and 6 respectively.
Round 3 will be a significant occasion for all eight Division 2 clubs, with four big matches scheduled on ANZAC Day. Diamond Creek, Hurstbridge, Mernda and Thomastown will be the four teams to host games on April 25.
No matches will be played over the Queen’s Birthday weekend, while a bye will also be held on July 18 between rounds 13 and 14.
Fitzroy Stars welcome Thomastown to Sir Douglas Nicholls Oval for the first time ever in Round 13. It is a big occasion for the Stars, with the match set to celebrate NAIDOC Week.
Every club will play its seven opponents twice in the opening 14 rounds, before playing four rivals for a third time between rounds 14 to 18.
