2016 NFL Best and Fairest Awards

Published on Thursday, September 15, 2016

BUNDOORA ruckman Matthew Dennis has claimed his second Frank Rosbrook Medal as the best and fairest player in the NFL’s Division 1 competition.

After sharing the award with Northcote Park’s Bronik Davies in 2012, Dennis was a runaway winner this time around.

The NFL’s representative co-captain polled 32 votes to finish 10 ahead of Davies.

Macleod on-baller Liam Brandt finished third on 20 votes, with Heidelberg ruckman Sam Gilmore and West Preston-Lakeside rover rounding out the top five with 13 votes apiece.

Dennis polled votes in 15 matches during the home and away season and seven times received the maximum three votes from the umpires.

Hurstbridge’s Tyron Loader won the Division 2 best and fairest, capping off a great week for the Bridges’ half back, who played a key role in his club’s 11-point grand final win over North Heidelberg.

Loader polled 17 votes to win the best and fairest ahead of North Heidelberg’s Shane Harvey (15 votes). 2015 winner Shane Jacobs finished third on 14 votes, with Diamond Creek’s Brad Perry and Panton Hill’s Thomas Blake also finishing in the top five vote winners.

Loader became just the third Hurstbridge player to win a best and fairest award in a senior competition and the first since Jai Audley won the Division 2 award in 2003.

Watsonia premiership captain Matthew Crompton sealed a perfect season for his club by taking out the Division 3 best and fairest.

Crompton earned votes in 10 matches throughout the year to poll 21 votes, finishing four votes ahead of St Mary’s midfielder Dillan Ronalds.

Crompton’s teammate Jarryd Allan was a place-getter for the second successive season and finished equal-third with Mernda’s David Hutchinson on 15 votes.

Lower Plenty ruckman Patrick Flynn was named the Division 1 Coaches Player of the Year. Thomas Blake took out the award in Division 2, while Mernda captain Les Adams was the Division 3 winner.

Bundoora’s Jacinta Tonkin claimed the netball Section 1 best and fairest. Tonkin became a three-time winner, after winning the Section 1 award in 2014 and the Section 2 best and fairest in 2012.

Other netball best and fairest award winners were: Mackenzie Blakey (Eltham, Section 2); Chelsea Kemp (Mernda 1, Section 3); Jessica Dao (Hurstbridge 1, Section 4); Stephanie Oakford (Epping 1, Section 5); Lahara Hollis (Whittlesea 5, Section 6); Megan Nichols (North Heidelberg 4, Section 7), Natasha Ravalli (Watsonia 5, Section 8); Tienneill Briffa (Lalor 2, Section 9) and Alanah Moore (Heidelberg West, Section 10).

Watsonia was named the 2016 Senior Club of the Year, Andrew Stephen was awarded Senior Umpire of the Year, Amy Perry the Netball Umpire of the Year, while Lalor’s Jenny Marshall won the Volunteer of the Year award.
