The NFL’s Under-15 Girls have progressed to the grand final of the AFL Victoria Metro Junior Championships for the second-consecutive year.
The Under-15 Girls won two of their three round-robin matches to advance to the grand final of the Division 1 competition.
They will take on the Yarra Junior Football League on Saturday June 24 at a venue yet to be determined.
The NFL girls responded from a 44-point loss to the YJFL in Round 1 to overcome the South Metro Junior Football League in a three-point thriller, before comfortably accounting for the South East Junior Football League in Round 3.
The two wins ensured the NFL’s Under-15 Girls progressed to the decider against the YFJL, where they will look to go one better than last year’s runner-up finish.
Over the past two weeks five NFL junior representative teams competed in the AFL Victoria Metro Junior Championships, taking on the best junior footballers from other leagues within Melbourne.
Despite the best efforts of our four boys teams, it was a tough initiation back into Division 1 of the Championships, with our boys teams winning just one of their 12 matches.
However, the win recorded by our Under-14A boys gave them a third-place finish on the Division 1 ladder – ensuring the NFL a place in Division 1 at next year’s Championships.
The Under-14A team rallied from 21 points behind at quarter-time, kicking 11 goals to six after the first break to claim a four-point win over the Eastern Football League at Mernda Waterview Recreation Reserve.
Following the conclusion of the round-robin matches, NFL Football Operations Manger Simon Devine praised the NFL’s players and coaches for their efforts throughout the Championships.
“The league was extremely proud of the way the players and coaches conducted themselves both in training and during their matches at the Championships,” Devine said.
“We thank all our players, coaches and parents for the commitment they have shown to the junior representative program and wish them all the very best for the remainder of the season with their local club.
“The league congratulates the Under-15 girls on their outstanding efforts over the past two weeks and wish the team well in their grand final.
“We hope to see as much support for the girls as possible for their grand final.”
