Take on the SEN All Stars

Published on Monday, October 29, 2012

Cadbury AFL 9s is a fast, free-flowing game that involves nine players on each team playing on a smaller field and features no tackling or bumping, making it suitable for people of any age or skill level.

All teams that register in the summer season go into the draw to play in a side led by Hawthorn great Robert Dipierdomenico against the SEN All Stars.

Twelve AFL 9s local leagues will commence their 2012/2013 season soon, with leagues based in Casey, Carlton, Kensington, Dandenong, Geelong, Hawthorn, Keilor Park, Moorabbin, South Morang, Point Cook, Ringwood and Victoria Park.

AFL Victoria General Manager Grant Williams says AFL 9s is quickly growing in popularity.

“Nationally numbers have grown rapidly in AFL 9s over the last year, with nearly 13,000 people now playing the game,” Williams said.

“AFL 9s enables people of all ages and ability levels to participate in male, female or mixed competitions that fit around their busy lives and provide a social and fitness outlet.”

Registrations for the chance to take on the SEN 1116am All Star Team close on Wednesday, October 31.

AFL9s BACKGROUND

The game is played between two teams of nine players, with the option of interchange players. The playing field dimensions of 100×50 metres (which can be modified depending on the age and ability level of participants) is divided into three zones: a mid zone and two scoring zones.

Teams score by kicking the football into their attacking scoring zone to designated forwards who are the only players permitted to score. For the mixed competitions a male goal is worth 6 points, whilst a female goal will award your team 9 points. A mark is awarded irrespective of the distance the ball has travelled and if the ball hits the ground it is an automatic turnover.
