In a game that was close from start to finish, Greensborough were able to secure a one-goal victory over West Preston-Lakeside in their Melbourne Greyhounds Division 1 clash at War Memorial Park.

Matthew Hyde’s men secured four crucial points heading into the Kings Birthday break, holding off West Preston-Lakeside 10.15 (75) to 10.9 (69).

The result pushes the Borough a game clear of West Preston-Lakeside and Eltham. However, they still remain half a game behind fifth-placed North Heidelberg

Greensborough and West Preston are no strangers to facing off against one another in high pressure times and Round 8 at War Memorial Park was no different.

Beginning the game with three behinds, Greensborough quickly picked up the pace and scored the first two goals, with Lachlan Hill kicking both of them.

West Preston entered the second quarter thirteen points down, aiming to keep Greensborough close. Scoring 4 goals in the second quarter the gap became smaller and they started to catch up.

Liam McVeigh kicking West Preston’s first goal of the game and another two throughout the game reflected his Best on Ground performance.

West Preston was able to create some momentum heading into half time, however Greensborough still held a stubborn lead by just over ten points, sneaking in the last goal of the quarter.

As you can imagine, the nerves began to kick in through the third quarter as both teams fought goal-for-goal, West Preston were lucky enough to finally take the lead for the first time all game, leaving the quarter four points up.

Entering the fourth quarter on the edge of their seats, the crowd began to gather around the boundary to watch the final fight. Starting strong, West Preston kicked the first goal of the quarter, but from then on Greensborough took the other two.

Marcus Federico, given the opportunity to kick a goal after the siren to make the scores level, unfortunately didn’t get it through.  Much to their crowd’s happiness, Greensborough were able to secure the win.

Greensborough fire and attack was present through the team, especially within their best players.

Thomas Brindley and Jackson Davies continued their excellent season, with coach Mathew Hyde happy with the team’s performance.

“We’re still missing some boys so hopefully if they come back in we can find a bit of form and structure,” Hyde said.

West Preston coach, Ian Aitken, reflected on the game, saying, “There is a willingness and a want to win, we’ve just got to execute it.”

“I’m certainly not disappointed in the boys’ performance. This is not something to get too down about, it’s something to say let’s work harder and improve in the areas we can”.

The game was quite a show for the crowd and displayed all in all some good footy.
