AFL Umpires to feature at NFNL training

Published on Monday, May 2, 2022

As part of the AFL’s Community Umpiring Round, six AFL field, boundary and goal umpires will be attending NFNL umpire’s training this Thursday night.

Special guests at the session will include field umpires Mat Nicholls (former NFNL) and Brent Wallace, boundary umpires Nick Phillips (former NFNL), Kieran Ferguson and Damian Cusack along with goal umpire Steve Piperno.

The AFL umpires will be taking our NFNL umpires through various skills sessions and drills before conducting a Q&A session at the conclusion of training.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for our umpires to learn from the very best and take their advice and tips into their own umpiring,” said NFNL Head of Umpiring Cameron Nash.

“It’s especially pleasing to have Mat and Nick attend being former NFNL umpires to show there is a pathway from community to the elite for those that aspire to.”

Nash hopes the night will spark interest from others to join the umpiring ranks.

“We are still heavily recruiting for this season so hopefully this good news story inspires others to give umpiring a go and perhaps one day reach the AFL”, he said.

For those interested in commencing umpiring please contact Cameron at cnash@nfnl.org.au or visit the Umpiring Hub on the NFNL website.
