Match report: Knights v Pioneers
The Knights hosted Bendigo Pioneers in Round 5 of the TAC Cup on Saturday April 27 at Preston City Oval. With 10 forced changes from Round 4 due to private school football, the Knights were playing 5 debutantes and were missing a number of their first-choice players. In blustery conditions, the Knights got the early jump with first-gamer Jungala Ellis kicking a goal within the opening minute of the game. The Knights continued to use the wind to their advantage going in with a 22-point lead at the first change. After a tight second quarter where the Knights held the Pioneers against the strengthening wind, they were able to go into the half time break with a 15-point advantage. Northern again were able to make good use of the wind in the third quarter and only some inaccuracy in front of goal kept Bendigo in the contest with the margin 36 points heading into the final quarter. The Pioneers started quickly with some early goals and were doing all the attacking before a fantastic captain’s goal from the boundary by Jake Kalanj, steadied things for the Knights. The Knights were then able to close the game with some strong defensive play from Michael Boundy down back and hold on for a stirring 21 point victory.
Nick Vlastuin AFL debut
Congratulations to 2012 Knights vice-captain Nick Vlastuin on making his AFL debut with Richmond last Friday night versus the Fremantle Dockers at Subiaco Oval. In what was a highly anticipated debut following his stellar NAB Cup form, Nick didn’t disappoint collecting 10 first half possessions and displaying a great attack on the ball. Although he was rotated more in the second half, fans will remember Nick fearlessly running back with the flight of the ball and launching himself into an oncoming pack of players, late in the game when the result was on the line. We hope Nick can continue to gain opportunities at AFL level and wish him all the best for the remainder of the season.
Sam Grimley VFL debut
The Knights also congratulate our 2012 ruckman Sam Gilmore on making his VFL senior debut with Port Melbourne in Round 3 against Sandringham Zebras. We wish Sam all the best for the rest of the season and hope he continues in the senior team.
