Burra retain second spot after comeback victory

St Mary’s 1 have come from behind to defeat Watsonia 2 by five goals in their Cleaning Melbourne Division 5 clash at Nets Banyule Stadium.

After winning their game last week, St Mary’s 1 took home another win in a hard fought and close game against the saints winning 29-24

The result of this game leave St Mary’s 1 sitting in second place of the Cleaning Melbourne Division 5 ladder whilst Watsonia 2 have dropped down to fourth place after Thomastown 2 defeated Heat 4 by one goal.

Olivia Famularo scored 20 goals for St Mary’s this game, 6 of which were in the last quarter, while Clara Hanlon, St Mary’s 1 leading goal scorer for this season, scored nine goals.

Matilda Blakey, Georgina Osullivan, Kyra Athanitis played exceptionally well throughout the game for St Mary’s.

Cinta Rymer, Watsonia 2’s highest leading goal scorer for this season so far, scored 17 goals throughout the game for the Saints, six of which were in the first quarter.

Eden Spackman, Teah Ryan, Kate Brown, and Ellie Bonnett played well for Watsonia 2, keeping the momentum up throughout the game and aiming to move the ball smoothly through the court for their team.

The game started off in favour of Watsonia 2, the Saints were putting pressure on St Mary’s 1 and staying consistent throughout the first period.

Both teams were going head-to-head for the ball, there was a lot of fast paced movement from Watsonia 2 who also were in control of the ball for majority of the opening quarter.

However, that didn’t phase St Mary’s 1 as they kept pushing and aimed to convert goals for their team.

Olivia Famularo scored a goal in the last six seconds of the first quarter for St Mary’s, keeping them in the contest.

Watsonia 2 played exceptionally well throughout quarters two and three, working in teams to move the ball up the court for their team and continuously aiming to get goals in.

However, St Mary’s 1 began to find form towards the end of the third quarter and neither team was backing down.

Both teams had a strong defence, resulting in the scores being locked at 21 apiece ahead of the final quarter.

The Saints and Burra tried to keep maintaining the same momentum, putting pressure on each other whilst continuing to perform under that pressure.

The last minutes of the game saw both teams pushing to convert goals and Watsonia aiming to regain the lead, but St Mary’s yet again scored in the last 39 seconds of the game, sealing the win for their team.
