The two biggest names to lodge a clearance to the Northern Football League were former AFL duo Brad Miller and Ricky Dyson.
Miller brings 157 games of AFL experience to Heidelberg this season, while Dyson has signed with Bundoora following nine seasons at Essendon.
The acquisition of Miller heads a list of quality signings for the Tigers as they look to atone for three consecutive Grand Final defeats. Heidelberg’s website last month announced the inclusion of 11 players to Warringal Park. They included star Wangaratta rover Jamie Allan, Werribee VFL-listed youngster Jordan Treloar and returning forward Mark Favrin from Monbulk.
With Dyson already secured, Bundoora hopes the highly-skilled midfielder will be joined by Eltham’s Chris Varsamakis and Lower Plenty’s Michael Ryan who both have pending transfers to the 2011 premier.
Having confirmed the signing of Xavier Clarke last month, West Preston-Lakeside will go into the 2013 season with a very different looking line-up should all transfers be approved.
Eight Roosters have applied for clearances over the past four days, including big names Jake Williams (PEGS), Bill Morrison (Doncaster East) and Kris Bardon (Vermont), while Matthew Vasilevski and youngster Chas Bromley have applied to join former coach Vin Datoli at Division 1 rival Lower Plenty.
Reigning Division 1 premier Northcote Park is yet to apply for any new faces, however, the Cougars could go into their premiership defence without 2012 premiership players Anthony Hogan, Daniel Rajab and Daniel Flynn.
Hogan, who was named best afield in Northcote Park’s 45-point Grand Final win, and Rajab have applied for a move to Eastern Football League Division 2 club Bayswater, while Tatura has put in a transfer request for ruckman Flynn.
Division 3 grand finalist Panton Hill has been the most active of any club in the competition in the opening days of the transfer period. The Redbacks have put in transfer applications for Montmorency duo Jarrod McGough and Ben Finnin, Lower Plenty youngsters Nathan Hendry and Jake Paterson and former Heidelberg premiership player Nick Lowther.
Macleod’s Cathal Corr and Greensborough’s Nick Riddle will again spend time with Collingwood in the VFL after the Magpies again submitted transfer requests for the duo.
Meanwhile, a number of NFL players have spent the summer playing football with clubs in the Northern Territory. Among those to play football up north over the past few months are Division 1 best and fairest winner Matthew Dennis, Cameron Cloke, Narby Kelly, Chris Long and Brent Marshall.
