Community Umpiring Round

Published on Wednesday, May 11, 2016

AT grounds right across Victoria this weekend we celebrate Community Umpiring Round.

The initiative is designed to recognise those patrolling the boundary, manning the goal line and controlling the action out in the middle each week, and the huge role they play in our game.

There are more than 6,000 registered umpires in Victoria at community level, along with thousands of club-based umpires, who commit their time and energy to allow those chasing the Sherrin the chance to do so.

In a fantastic initiative, a number of AFL umpires will this week attend NFL umpire training at Barling Park.

Among those to visit the league’s umpiring group will be field umpires Jack Edwards and Chris Kamolins, goal umpire Chelsea Roffey and boundary umpires Jordan Andrews and Tim Morrison.

The AFL has also opened its doors for selected high achieving umpires to attend AFL umpire training at Ikon Park this week.

Those nominated will receive expert coaching from Head AFL Umpires’ Coach Hayden Kennedy, AFL Boundary Umpire Coach Simon Leigh and AFL Goal Umpire Coach Steven Stirling.

Community Umpire Round is also another opportunity to encourage those who want to be involved in the greatest game in the world to take up umpiring.

If you are new to the game, or your playing days are over, then umpiring is a great way to contribute to community football.

Regardless of your age, gender, culture or ability, anyone can get involved in umpiring and enjoy the many benefits the role provides.

Not only do you get the best view of the action, but it helps keep you fit, be part of a team and learn leadership skills that you can take with you when you walk off the ground.
