Cougars land Walsh, Maghamez; Magpies chase Nayna

Published on Wednesday, February 13, 2013

Northcote Park has landed the signatures of two key players, with Tim Walsh and Kane Maghamez both securing transfers to the reigning Division 1 premier.

Walsh was drafted to the Western Bulldogs with pick number four in the 2002 AFL Draft, but managed only one senior appearance.

He has since played at VFL level and more recently in the VAFA, spending the past two seasons with Old Trinity in the premier section.

At 196cm, Walsh will boost the Cougars’ talls department following the departure of premiership ruckman Daniel Flynn to Tatura.

Maghamez (pictured) looks a handy acquisition from EFL club Templestowe.

A penetrating right-foot kick, Maghamez claimed consecutive Perc James medals in 2009 and 2010 as the best and fairest player in the EFL’s fourth division.

He has the ability to play in a number of positions and has a knack for kicking goals – booting 38 in 18 games for the Dockers in Division 3 last year.

Heidelberg and Montmorency have put in clearance requests for the top two vote-getters in last season’s Essendon District Football League premier division.

The Tigers have put in a transfer request for Mark Lynch, who claimed the 2012 RS Reynolds medal as the EDFL’s best and fairest player while playing for Essendon Doutta Stars.

The initial clearance request for Lynch has been denied so it remains unclear whether the Tigers will be able to lure the 25-year-old Queenslander who previously played with Southport.

However it wasn’t all bad news for Tigers as they secured the services of Jordan Treloar (Northcote Park) and Wangaratta trio Jamie Allan, Danny Allan and Robbie Allan.

Montmorency has a pending transfer bid for Rowan Nayna, who finished two votes behind Lynch for the EDFL premier division best and fairest award.

Nayna, who was drafted by the Western Bulldogs in 2004, was best afield in Greenvale’s upset Grand Final win over Strathmore last year and has previously also achieved premiership success with Balwyn in the EFL.

Bundoora defender Matthew Hyde appears set to join his father Robert at Greensborough after submitting a clearance application on Saturday.

Hyde was a vital member of the Bulls’ 2011 premiership win but has opted for a move to War Memorial Park after Robert accepted the coaching position at the conclusion of the 2012 season.

Elsewhere, Tristain Harrower has moved to Thomastown after lodging a clearance from Glenroy, Reservoir has moved to get Steven Hiho from Northcote Park and Mathew Pow is hoping to get to Macleod after one season with South Morang.
