The season began on Friday night when Northcote Park hosted Heidelberg in a re-match of the 2012 Division 1 Grand Final.
The action continued on Saturday with a number of close matches kick-starting the year.
Diamond Creek eclipsed North Heidelberg by 10 points in the NFL Match of the Day, while Lower Plenty and Hurstbridge both produced stirring last quarters to record come-from-behind wins.
In Division 3, Parkside stunned Panton Hill with a thrilling win away from home, while Reservoir fought out a close one over St Mary’s and Watsonia produced the goods against Heidelberg West.
