Women’s Review: April 30

We’re down to just six undefeated teams across our three NFNL women’s divisions as the competition begins to go up a notch.

Heidelberg Golf Club Division 1

West Preston-Lakeside 1 backed up their impressive win over Diamond Creek Women’s 1 last week with a 43-point victory over Greensborough at Greensborough War Memorial Park. The Roosters were dominant throughout the entire afternoon, winning all four quarters to claim a 10.10 (70) to 4.3 (27) win. Simone Burridge produced three goals for the visitors, while Ashleigh Snow stood up and played her best game of the season. Dakota Gray De Jong was the Boro’s multiple goal scorer while Emmison Zeally had another great match.

Diamond Creek Women’s 1 turned their form around to claim their first win of the 2023 season, defeating Eltham by 37 points at Plenty Park Oval. The Creekers kept the Panthers scoreless at quarter time and produced 21 scoring shots on their way to a 10.11 (71) to 5.4 (34) victory. Linda Thorp got back to her best, kicking five majors for the afternoon. Tiana Richmond and Jade Mclay showed their class with terrific performances. Jacki White and Sienna Gunning impressed for the visitors.

Cleaning Melbourne Division 2

A tight contest at Sir Douglas Nicholls Oval saw the Fitzroy Stars end Heidelberg’s winning run, as they claimed a 11-point triumph. The Stars got out to a hot start after trailing at quarter time, but while the Tigers came back, they fell just short of victory, going down 5.8 (38) to 3.9 (27). Leah Seeto was dominant for the home side while Jessica Bamblett was an important contributor up forward with two majors. Emily Rowe starred for the Tigers, with Rianne Coldebella kicking two goals.

St Mary’s made it two wins from two with a superb 54-point win over Whittlesea at the Whittlesea Showgrounds. The Burra kicked five goals to nil in the first half, never looking back on their way to a 9.10 (64) to 1.4 (10) victory. The visitors had seven individual goalkickers for their nine majors with one of those goal scorers in Caitlin Kreuzberger standing out with an incredible game around the ground. Ruby Pantisano was named as the Eagles best.

Banyule got back on the winners list with a brilliant 83-point victory over Darebin 2 at A.K. Lines Reserve. The Bears dominated from start to finish, keeping the Falcons goalless on the way to a 13.7 (85) to 0.2 (2) win. Chloe Sheean was the star of the show up forward, kicking six majors for the Bears, while Candice Dyson was also excellent for the home side. Ruby Cray had another solid performance for the visitors.

NFNL Division 3 Women’s

Wallan have continued their fantastic start to the 2023 season with a 17-point victory over Montmorency 2 at Montmorency Park North Oval. It was only a six-point difference between the two sides at three quarter time, but a two goal to nil final term was enough to see Wallan as 4.2 (26) to 1.3 (9) victors. Chelsea Paton and Ava Borg were the standouts for the visitors while Abbey Ward was named as Montmorency’s best.

Heidelberg West have also added to their fast start in the NFNL women’s competition with a 48-point triumph over Diamond Creek Women’s 2 at Heidelberg Park. The Hawks registered 19 scoring shots while keeping the Creekers to a single goal in their 7.12 (54) to 1.0 (6) victory. Emily O’Keefe made it seven goals in two weeks with another bag of three majors with Tracey Newton a strong contributor. Elly-May Drelar was the visitors’ best.

For the third straight game Mernda have kept an opposition scoreless, this time it was West Preston-Lakeside 2 in a massive 91-point win at J.E. Moore Park. The Demons produced their highest score of the season so far in the 13.13 (91) to 0.0 (0) win as they remain on top of the ladder. Tianah Teo was brilliant up forward with four majors while Ruby Sommerville had one of her best games. Lillian Manolopoulos stood out for the home side.

Meanwhile Laurimar chalked up their first win of the season with a 21-point victory over North Heidelberg at Laurimar Reserve. The Power hadn’t scored a point prior to their clash with the Bulldogs, but the side produced their best game yet, winning 5.3 (33) to 2.0 (12). Brianna Curran kicked two majors and Rachel Chettle was terrific. Tayissa Tibos was a solid contributor for the Bulldogs.
