There were some close semi-finals in the NFNL senior women’s competition as sides kept their seasons alive or booked their ticket to Grand Final day.
Heidelberg Golf Club Division 1
The third 2024 Division 1 women’s Grand Final rematch of this season saw Diamond Creek Women’s 1 book their Grand Final ticket with a convincing 40-point triumph over St Mary’s at Tony Sheehan Oval. Angelo Lamanna’s side got off to a fast start, kicking the only goal of the opening term before adding four goals in the second quarter to lead by 33 points at the main break. After the Burra kicked the first two goals of the third quarter the Creekers then kicked the last four majors of the match to secure the 9.5 (59) to 2.7 (19) triumph. Maykaylah Appleby and Linda Thorp starred in attack with three goals each while Karly Cobern, Heidi Gifford and Adele Coppola had excellent games. Mikayla Plunkett, Megan Girolami and Charlotte Evans gave it their all for Troy Bickerton’s side, who now play Montmorency 1 in next week’s preliminary final.

Cleaning Melbourne Division 2
Lower Plenty have locked in a second consecutive Grand Final appearance with a 30-point win over Fitzroy Stars in the early afternoon second semi-final at Tony Sheehan Oval. The Bears started off slowly, conceding the first two goals of the game, as well as most of the territory, before kicking the final two goals of the first half to reduce their deficit from 16 points to two at the main break. After kicking the only goal of the third, Stewart Lewis’ side then kicked four goals to one behind in the last quarter to win 7.6 (48) to 2.6 (18). Ava Klaic kicked two goals and was yet again excellent in midfield alongside Amelia Mullane, Shae Audley and Darci Fitzgerald. Medika Bonney was yet again terrific for the Stars alongside Rianne Hood and Rachele Carrozza.
Kilmore claimed their first ever senior women’s finals victory with a 25-point win over Darebin 1 at La Trobe University Oval No.2. Both sides were evenly matched in the opening half, kicking two goals apiece in the opening quarter before a two goal to one second term in favour of the Two Blues saw them lead by seven points at the main break. After they each kicked one goal in the third term Kilmore then put the foot down in the final quarter, kicking three goals to three behinds to win 8.8 (56) to 4.7 (31). Chiara Nardo starred with five goals and was well supported by Jessica Vilinskis, Kasey Marsden and Sienna Shinners. Claire Hardi, Portia Greenacre and Julia McArdle capped off terrific season’s while Karly McNiece was their only multiple goalscorer.
NFNL Division 3 Women’s
North Heidelberg have booked their place in the NFNL Division 3 Women’s Grand Final after outlasting a resilient Whittlesea outfit by 13 points in a hard-fought second semi-final at Tony Sheehan Oval. You can read the full match report by clicking here.
Heidelberg West continued to build form and keep their season alive with a 78-point triumph over Montmorency 2 at La Trobe University Oval No.2. After kicking one goal in the opening term the Hawks kicked two in the second to take a 19-point lead into the main break. Brett Pollard’s side then kicked three in the third before doubling their goals tally in the last quarter to secure a 12.8 (80) to 0.2 (2) win. Eight players impacted the scoreboard for the Hawks who were well led by Abby Collins, Alanah Moore and Crystal Grech. Shelby Coall and Ruby-Lily Howse both put in strong efforts for the Magpies who bow out in straight sets.
