Published on Monday, August 21, 2023

The last of our Grand Final sides have been confirmed following three terrific preliminary finals in our senior women’s competition.

Heidelberg Golf Club Division 1

Banyule continue to tick off the milestones and have won their way to their first ever Grand Final after prevailing by 15 points over Eltham. Both sides had produced excellent clashes in the lead up to this match and it looked to be another close encounter at three quarter time when the Bears led by just six points. Banyule then went to the next level, kicking two goals two goals to nil in the final term to finish 8.3 (51) to 5.6 (36) victors. It was Brieanna Musgrave’s time to shine up forward, as she produced a season-high of four majors while Rebekah Watson was named in her side’s best for the third time in her previous four games. Shannon Ashby and Alannah Murray produced solid efforts for the Panthers while Angelique Reibelt and Ellen Horsley kept the scoreboard ticking with two goals each.

Cleaning Melbourne Division 2

Heidelberg have booked their first Grand Final appearance in the senior women’s competition since 2019 after an impressive 31-point victory over the Fitzroy Stars. The second and third terms were where the Tigers did the damage, kicking six goals to two in that period before going into conservation mode in the final quarter to secure an 8.5 (53) to 3.4 (22) result. Emma Rowe was a force inside 50 as following two goalless games, she led the way up forward with an impressive six-goal haul. Nikki Watts popped up with the other two goals meanwhile Mia Tascone stood out in midfield. Leah Seeto had another terrific finals performance for the Stars as did teammate Tiarna Steel, but despite their best efforts, the Stars brilliant finals run came to an end.

NFNL Division 3 Women’s

Darebin 2’s incredible finals run continued on Sunday, scoring a late goal to claim an upset three-point victory over Heidelberg West. The game was tight all morning, with the Hawks holding a four-point advantage at three quarter time before the Falcons controlled the final term. 11 minutes into the term with a three-point deficit to chase, Cassie Willcocks’ took a contested mark before converting the set shot to give Darebin a lead which they held onto throughout the remainder of the game, winning 2.5 (17) to 2.2 (14) and securing a Grand Final meeting with Wallan. Alisha Priestley was excellent around the ground as was teammate Jasmin Weightman who was named in the side’s best for the second time this season. Chloe Rowan meanwhile did her best for the Hawks, kicking both her side’s goals for the match.
